MLS Preview: D. C. United (1-1-1) at New York City FC (1-1-1)

0

In August of last year, D. C. United defeated New York City FC for the first time ever on the road, winning 2-1 at Red Bull Arena. D.C. has won only two of its seven MLS matches at Yankee Stadium (D2 L5), including a 6-0 defeat in October 2021, when the club set a club record.

Saturday marked the fifth time in a row that New York City FC has won at home in all competitions, giving the club its first victory of the season against Inter Miami FC. NYCFC has not had a more extended home series of wins in all rivalries since winning seven in succession at home from November 2017 to June 2018.

D. C. United has lost 11 of its last 14 road games (W2 D1) since last season, including a 2-0 defeat at Columbus Crew SC in its first 2023 road match. In those two road victories, D. C. scored seven goals, but it only managed to score three goals in the other 12 games, failing to score in 10 of them.

Seven of New York City FC’s 13 shots against Inter Miami FC on Saturday were made by Santiago Rodriguez (three shots, four chances created). Rodriguez had at least three shots and created at least three chances in an MLS match for the eighth time, surpassing only Maxi Moralez (12) for NYCFC since 2021.

This season, D. C. United has scored a league-high three goals in the final 15 minutes of games, including Chris Durkin’s equalizer in the 80th minute against Orlando City SC on Saturday. Only Seattle Sounders FC (6) scored more goals in the final 15 minutes of games than D. C. United did that season.

MLS Preview: Columbus Crew SC (1-1-1) at New York Red Bulls (0-1-2)

0

Since the start of the 2021 season, the New York Red Bulls and Columbus Crew SC have played five times, with each team winning twice and drawing once., with one goal scored in each of the five games or a draw. A goal that changed the outcome occurred in the final four games in the 87th minute or later.

Despite only giving up two goals, the New York Red Bulls (D2 L1) have lost their first three games of the season for the first time since 2014. New York is one of only six teams in MLS history to fail to win any of its first three games despite conceding two or fewer goals.

On Saturday, the Columbus Crew SC overcame a deficit to draw 1-1 with Toronto, avoiding defeat for the 10th time in their last 13 road games (W3 D7). However, Columbus’s ninth consecutive road defeat (D6 L3) occurred in that draw, with its most recent victory coming in Chicago in early July.

In their first three games this season, the New York Red Bulls have only faced three shots on goal, two of which have been successful. the three shots on track are the least looked by a group in their initial three matches of a season since the Los Angeles Galaxy (likewise 3) in 2010.

In the Crew’s 1-1 draw with Toronto FC on Saturday, Jimmy Medranda scored his fifth goal from outside the box, making it his 10th goal in MLS. R. Espinoza, L. Zelarayan, and R. Leal are the other three players who have scored ten or more goals since Medranda joined the MLS in 2013. At least half of Medranda’s goals have come from outside the box.

MLS Preview: Nashville SC (2-0-1) at New England Revolution (2-1-0)

0

The New England Revolution and Nashville SC have drawn three of their previous four matches, with Nashville SC winning the other one, 2-0, in August 2021 at home. Goalless draws have marred both previous encounters in Foxborough.

New England suffered a 4-0 defeat at Los Angeles Football Club on Sunday, despite having won the season’s first two matches for the first time in club history. In any case, an Unrests win on Saturday would give them nine focuses, which would be their second-best beginning to a season in club history (10 focuses through 4 matches in 2005).

Nashville SC has started the season with three straight games without a loss, scoring seven points (W2 D1). Only the Whitecaps in 2012 and the Red Bulls in 2007 were the only MLS teams to keep opponents scoreless in their first four games.

In its Sunday defeat to the Los Angeles Football Club, New England was hit by 18 shots, 12 of which were on target. The 12 shots on track approached the second-most the Transformation have looked in a MLS match beginning around 2010, having just confronted more against the Association in May 2019 (15).

In Nashville SC’s 2-0 home victory over CF Montreal Impact on Saturday, the club did not concede a goal for the fifth time in the club’s short MLS history. Since Nashville SC joined MLS in 2020, only New York City FC has played them more than Nashville SC (6 times).

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
• Tonight’s matchup is the final time the Kraken will play the Sharks this season. The two teams have split their previous two games, and a win tonight would give Seattle its eighth series win of the season, having previously won its season series against Buffalo, Colorado, Columbus, Detroit, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and St. Louis. The Kraken have one game remaining to play against Los Angeles, but they will record a series win regardless of the outcome after going 3-0-0 against the Kings in their first three meetings of the season. The Kraken have five season series that still could be won: Anaheim, Chicago, Minnesota, Nashville and Vegas.

• A win tonight would make the Sharks the first team that the Kraken has defeated five times. Seattle owns a 4-2-0 all-time record against San Jose.

• Seattle has a 10-7-2 record against Pacific Division opponents this season and have beaten each of their division rivals at least once.

• With the Kraken’s four-goal outing in their game on March 3 against Columbus, they surpassed their goal total from all of last season in 20 fewer games. Seattle has scored 234 goals in 67 games this season compared to 213 goals in 2021-22. o The team’s 234 goals this season were the fifth-most in the NHL entering play Wednesday, trailing only the Edmonton Oilers (264), Boston Bruins (246), Buffalo Sabres (241) and Tampa Bay Lightning (234).

• Since the start of the New Year, the Kraken are tied for fourth the league in wins (19) and rank fifth in points (41). The team’s 117 goals since Jan. 1 were the second-most in the league entering play Wednesday.

• Jaden Schwartz has seven points (three goals, four assists) in his last seven games played.

• Jordan Eberle’s goal in the Kraken’s game on March 3 at Columbus was his 50th point of the season. It is the sixth time in his career and first time since 2017-18 that Eberle has recorded 50 or more points in a season.

SHARK TANK
• Matty Beniers has four points (one goal, three assists) in three career games against the Sharks.

• Morgan Geekie has recorded a point in four of six career games he has played against the Sharks, scoring one goal and adding four assists.

• Philipp Grubauer owns a 9-4-1 career record against the Sharks with a .921 save percentage and a 2.09 goals-against average. His nine wins are tied with the Minnesota Wild for his most against a single opponent.

• Jaden Schwartz recorded his 100th NHL point on Jan. 3, 2015 against San Jose. He has three points (two goals, one assist) in his last four games against the Sharks.

• Justin Schultz scored his first NHL goal against the Sharks on Jan. 22, 2013.

ROAD WARRIORS
• The Kraken have posted an 21-9-3 record while playing on the road this season. The team’s 21 road wins have nearly doubled their total from last season (11).

• Entering play Wednesday, the Kraken ranked in the top five in the NHL in road wins (21, tied third) and road regulation wins (18, fourth). The team’s 126 goals scored on the road and 3.82 goals-per-game-played on the road were both ranked third in the NHL entering play Wednesday.

• The Kraken’s 12 wins since Jan. 1 were second to only the Boston Bruins (13) for the most in 2023 and the team’s 25 points ranked third entering play Wednesday, trailing Boston and New Jersey, who both have 27 road points since the start of the new year.

• A win tonight over the Sharks would give the Kraken their third road winning streak of at least five games. The team previously recorded a six-game road win streak from Nov. 1 to 29, 2022 and a seven-game streak from Jan. 1 to 14.

• With 28 points in 33 games, Matty Beniers (13 goals, 15 assists) is the Kraken’s leading scorers when playing on the road this season. Beniers’ 13 goals, 28 points and 0.85 points per game on the road this year were the most among rookies who have played in at least two road games this season entering play Wednesday.

• Vince Dunn has totaled 20 points (four goals, 16 assists) in his last 17 games played on the road. Dunn’s seven goals scored on the road this season were tied for the fourth-most in the NHL among all defensemen entering play Wednesday.

• Jaden Schwartz has seven points (three goals, four assists) in his last seven road games and enters tonight’s game riding a three-game road point streak.

• Alex Wennberg enters tonight’s game riding a three-game road point streak, totaling four points (two goals, two assists) during that span.

BLUE JACKETS NOTES
PLAY OF LATE
The Blue Jackets improved to 5-4-3 in their last 12 games following a 6-5 overtime victory at San Jose on Tuesday. The club, which is 8-8-5 in the past 21 contests, has registered points in nine of its last 14 games (6-5-3), with wins against four of the top-14 teams in the League in points (Toronto-5th; Dallas-6th; Edmonton-12th; Winnipeg-14th). The club has collected points in 10 of its last 14 contests away from Nationwide Arena dating back to January 23 (6-4-4).

HIT THE ROAD, JACK(ETS)
After playing a schedule heavy in-home games to date, the Blue Jackets will keep their travel bags packed over the month of March. The club is in the middle of a stretch of 12-of-15 games away from Nationwide Arena from February 26 through the end of March. The Jackets kicked off a season-long five-game road trip on Tuesday at San Jose before making stops at Los Angeles (Thursday), Anaheim (Friday), Las Vegas (Sunday) and Washington (March 21).
