MLS Preview: Los Angeles Football Club (2-0-0) at Seattle Sounders FC (2-1-0)

0

In their first MLS match, Los Angeles Football Club defeated Seattle 1-0 in March 2018. Since then, Seattle has not lost to Los Angeles Football Club in six consecutive home matches (W4 D2). Only one of either team’s two road victories in the series came in March 2018, when Seattle defeated Los Angeles 3-1 in the West Final.

Seattle returns home after losing to Cincinnati 1-0 on Saturday, where it won its first two games by a combined score of 6-0. In 2019 and 2021, Seattle prevailed in its first three home games, with the third victory coming against Los Angeles Football Club in 2021.

It is only the second time since 2000 that a defending MLS Cup champion has won its first two games of a season (Colorado won its first three in 2011), but Los Angeles Football Club has won back-to-back games to open a season for the third time in the club’s history (2018, 2019).

In Seattle’s first two games at home this season, Jordan Morris and the injured Heber scored goals. Obafemi Martins was the only Sounders player in 2015 to score in the team’s first three home games.

In Sunday’s 4-0 victory over New England, Los Angeles Football Club’s Denis Bouanga scored twice and assisted on a third goal. Bouanga has scored two goals and two assists in two games this MLS season, up from three goals and three assists in 10 games (including playoffs) for Los Angeles Football Club last season.

* Artistic impression came to life with the first-ever live, animated NHL game telecast as ESPN, Disney Channel and the NHL teamed up to bring fans the “NHL Big City Greens Classic” on Tuesday.

Leon Draisaitl scored two goals and became the second player to reach the 100-point mark this season, joining teammate Connor McDavid.

* Wednesday’s four-game slate features an NHL on TNT doubleheader with the Maple Leafs hosting the Avalanche followed by the Wild visiting the Blues.

RANGERS DEFEAT CAPITALS IN LANDMARK “NHL BIG CITY GREENS CLASSIC”
Mika Zibanejad zipped two goals into the Washington net as New York earned a 5-3 win in the “NHL Big City Greens Classic,” a first-of-its-kind live volumetric animation telecast presented by ESPN+, Disney Channel, Disney XD and Disney+.

* The alternate presentation of the game leveraged NHL Edge puck and player tracking to recreate the action on the ice while featuring “Big City Greens” favorites Cricket Green taking the place of Rangers forward Vincent Trocheck and Tilly Green playing in place of Capitals forward Evgeny Kuznetsov. Zibanejad opened the scoring and had a second first-period goal, which featured a highlight-reel alley-oop assist from Igor Shesterkin (who appeared as Gramma Alice).

Steve Levy and former Rangers captain Mark Messier had the traditional broadcast from Madison Square Garden, while Drew Carter and Kevin Weekes called the special telecast. Carter and Weekes wore motion capture suits working to display animation and respective avatars for the simulation modeled after characters from the show in ESPN’s Studio Z on March 10.

DRAISAITL JOINS TEAMMATE McDAVID IN 100-POINT CLUB
Leon Draisaitl (44-56—100 in 66 GP) tallied twice to reach the 100-point mark for the fourth time in his NHL career and become the second player with a triple-digit total this season, joining teammate Connor McDavid (56-73—129 in 68 GP). Draisaitl (Cologne, Germany) became the sixth player born outside of North America with four or more 100-point seasons in NHL history, joining Peter Stastny (7x), Jari Kurri (6x), Jaromir Jagr (5x), Teemu Selanne (4x) and Alex Ovechkin (4x).

* Draisaitl and McDavid, who had 1-1—2 on Tuesday and now owns sole possession of the highest single-season point total by an active player, were the first two players to reach the 100-point mark last season. It marked the second time in NHL history that the sameteammates were the first two players to 100 points in consecutive seasons – the only other such instance was Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr of the Bruins in1973-74 and 1974-75.

WINS BY DIVISION LEADERS FEATURED IN #NHLSTATS: LIVE UPDATES
Tuesday’s edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates featured more notes from the 12-game slate, including victories by the Western Conference-leading Golden Knights (42-20-6, 90 points) and Metropolitan Division-leading Hurricanes (44-14-8, 96 points):

Jonathan Marchessault (1-2—3) recorded his franchise-leading 17th three-point game in a Golden Knights uniform and Jonathan Quick made 27 saves to help Vegas defeat Philadelphia. Quick improved to 4-0-0 since joining the Golden Knights and tied John Vanbiesbrouck (374) for the second-most wins among U.S.-born goaltenders in NHL history, behind Ryan Miller (391).

* After Jaccob Slavin opened the scoring with his 42nd career goal – tying Dougie Hamilton and Joe Corvo for the sixth most by a defenseman in Hurricanes/Whalers history – Dylan DeMelo pulled the Jets even in the second period, but Jesperi Kotkaniemi (2-1—3) factored on three goals to lift Carolina to victory at PNC Arena. The Hurricanes gained a two-point lead over the Devils (44-17-6, 94 points), who fell to the Lightning on Tuesday.

NOT ONE PATH: NATHAN WALKER
Nathan Walker
, who moved to Australia at the age of two and started his hockey career in the “Land Down Under,” is the most recent player to be featured in the Not One Path series ahead of the Blues’ national broadcast on TNT. Walker was inspired to play hockey after watching The Mighty Ducks movie – he started playing inline hockey before transitioning onto the ice. With the nearest hockey rink 45 minutes from Walker’s home and the one he and his brother played out of an hour-and-a-half away, it was long drives and dedication to the sport which kept him motivated. Walker carved a path not-yet-travelled to the NHL and is an inspiration to the Australian hockey community.

NBA Preview: Dallas Mavericks (34-35) at San Antonio Spurs (18-50)

0

If the Dallas Mavericks had the option, they might have chosen the San Antonio Spurs, their opponent on Wednesday night, to try to snap a three-game losing streak.

However, the Spurs have been playing better recently, winning four of their last seven games, despite the fact that they are already out of contention for the postseason. A victory over the Denver Nuggets, who lead the Western Conference, was part of that stretch.

In a home-away series on Saturday and Monday, Dallas lost to the undermanned Memphis Grizzlies twice. The Mavericks were without Kyrie Irving (right foot soreness), Luka Doncic (left thigh strain), and Christian Wood (right foot soreness) in their 104-88 defeat.

Josh Green scored 23 points for the Mavericks, led by Jaden Hardy’s 28 points.

Irving, Wood, and Tim Hardaway Jr. (left calf contusion) were listed as questionable, while Doncic was already ruled out for Wednesday’s game.

The Mavericks are currently in a three-way tie for eighth place in the Western Conference. They are two games behind sixth place, which is the last position from which they will not have to play in the play-in tournament.

The Spurs will play the second game of a home-and-home series that began on Tuesday with a rousing victory over the Orlando Magic by a score of 132-114.

Jeremy Sochan had 29 points and 11 rebounds to lead the way, but the real story was that San Antonio, which was 26th in the league in 3-point shooting going into the game, hit a franchise-record 22 treys on 41 attempts.

For San Antonio, Zach Collins scored 25 points, and Doug McDermott and Devonte’ Graham scored 15 points each.

Despite playing without Keldon Johnson (sore left foot) and Tre Jones (illness), the Spurs won for the second time in three games and set a season high with 39 assists, nine of which came from Graham.

After shooting 54.5 percent from the field and 58.6 percent from three-point range over the first three periods, the Spurs took a 98-89 lead into the fourth quarter. With 6:28 remaining, Orlando came within six points, but San Antonio won the game with seven straight points.

The Mavericks prevailed 126-125 in San Antonio on December 31 and 142-116 in Dallas on February 23 in the first two games of the season series. The groups will go head to head in their customary season finale at Dallas on April 9.

NBA Preview: Los Angeles Lakers (34-35) at Houston Rockets (16-52)

0

When the Houston Rockets visit the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night, the Lakers will be without both of their stars, but they will be aiming for their fifth win in six games.

Due to a tendon injury in his right foot, LeBron James won’t play again until at least the following week.

The Lakers are wrapping up a run of back-to-back games on Wednesday, and Anthony Davis, who has been the team’s leader in James’ absence, will miss the game.

Davis scored 35 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in Tuesday’s 123-108 road win over the New Orleans Pelicans. Darvin Ham, the Lakers’ coach, said that Davis would be sat out of the Houston game because of the right foot injury that kept Davis out from mid-December to late January.

The team’s decision to give Davis a night off didn’t please Davis.

Since their roster was reshaped at the deadline for trades, the Lakers are 9-4. On Tuesday, they scored a franchise record 15 3-pointers in the first half and led the Pelicans by as many as 40 points before losing it in the third and fourth quarters.

Nonetheless, the Lakers achieved their primary objective and moved into a tie for eighth place in the Western Conference with the Dallas Mavericks and Oklahoma City Thunder.

On Monday, rookie forward Jabari Smith Jr. became the first Houston rookie since Hakeem Olajuwon to record three consecutive 20-point, 10-rebound double-doubles when he had 24 points and 11 rebounds in a 111-109 home victory over the Boston Celtics. Despite the fact that the Rockets, who finished last, are already out of playoff contention, Smith Jr. is providing them with strong late-season production.

Smith is averaging 24.7 points and 11 rebounds during his double-double streak, matching his career high of five 3-pointers. Smith’s improved play continues into the start of the season after the All-Star break. In the first 55 games, he averaged 12 points and seven rebounds, but in the last 10 games, he’s averaging 14.6 points and 7.6 rebounds.

After an 11-game losing streak, the Rockets have won three of their last six games, but they may still finish the NBA season with the worst record for a third time.

NBA Preview: Philadelphia Sixers (45-22) at Cleveland Cavaliers (44-27)

When the Philadelphia 76ers visit the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday, they will be aiming for their sixth victory in a row.

On Sunday, the Sixers easily defeated the Washington Wizards 112-93, and they will play Cleveland in the first of three road games.

Joel Embiid had 34 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and four blocked shots in his sixth consecutive game with at least 30 points.

James Harden of Philadelphia notched his 31st point-assist double-double of the season with 18 points and 14 assists.

In addition to receiving some much-needed rest by sitting out the fourth quarter with the victory already sealed, Embiid maintained his dominance on the defensive end.

In the Washington game, Sixers forward Jalen McDaniels suffered a right hip contusion. He didn’t show up for Tuesday’s practice, and it wasn’t clear if he could play against the Cavaliers.

The Cavaliers are coming off consecutive road victories over the Charlotte Hornets, so they will aim for their third win in a row.

On Sunday, Cleveland prevailed 114-108, and on Tuesday, it triumphed 120-104.

Evan Mobley set up 26 focuses in the rematch for the Cavaliers, who were without Donovan Mitchell (finger sprain) and Jarrett Allen (eye wound).

Cleveland shot 51.1% from the field and 46.7 percent (14 of 30) from three-point range for a game that featured 24 points from Cedi Osman, 22 from Caris LeVert, and 19 points from Darius Garland.

The Cavaliers were successful in defeating the struggling Hornets despite their lack of depth; however, facing the Sixers will present a much more difficult challenge.

The Cavaliers ought to be more profound on Wednesday, as Mitchell is supposed to play. Since suffering the injury on Friday against the Miami Heat, Allen has missed two games consecutively. Bickerstaff claims that he is taken into account to be day-to-day.
