TONIGHT’S GAME
The Capitals host the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday at Capital One Arena for the fourth and final meeting between the teams this season. Washington is 3-0-0 against Columbus, winning all three games by a combined score of 11-5. The Capitals will look to sweep the season series with the Blue Jackets for the first time since the formation of the Metropolitan Division in 2013-14. CAROLINA HURRICANES NOTES:

LAST GAME
The Hurricanes posted a 5-4 overtime win against the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center on Saturday. The Hurricanes trailed the Flyers in the final minute of regulation, but Martin Necas scored with 0.3 seconds remaining to force overtime. Sebastian Aho scored his third hat trick of the season, including his second overtime winner just 28 seconds into the extra frame. Brady Skjei also lit the lamp for the third straight game, and Brent Burns recorded an assist to set a new Hurricanes single-season record for points by a defenseman. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, a star player for the Oklahoma City Thunder, returns to the city where his NBA career began this week with a chance to disrupt his former team.

With a lot at stake, Gilgeous-Alexander takes the Thunder to Los Angeles to face the Clippers. Tuesday marks the start of back-to-back games, with another one on Thursday at Los Angeles.

After winning seven of its last nine games in a spurt that has the team thinking big, Oklahoma City is making a late-season push up the standings. The Thunder (35-36) were in eighth place in the Western Conference at the start of NBA play on Monday, making them eligible for the play-in tournament.

The Thunder are just two and a half games behind Los Angeles in the standings and are just one game behind the Dallas Mavericks, who are in sixth place. The Clippers (38-34) are currently in fifth place and have secured a spot in the first round.

Oklahoma City is demonstrating that the moment is not too great after missing the playoffs the previous two seasons.

Gilgeous-Alexander, who was acquired by the Thunder from the Clippers in July 2019, scored 40 points on Sunday as Oklahoma City rallied to defeat the Phoenix Suns, 124-120. Before changing the game, the Thunder fell behind by as many as 15 points and 12 at halftime.

Now comes a pair of games that have a personal connection to Gilgeous-Alexander as well as significance in the race for the playoffs.

Paul George was acquired by the Clippers as a result of the 2019 trade that changed each franchise. Los Angeles overcame a surprise defeat to defeat the Portland Trail Blazers 117-102 on the road on Sunday thanks to George’s 29 points and nine rebounds.

Due to foul trouble, George only played 15 minutes in the first half, but he scored 19 points in 19 minutes of the second half.

The Clippers’ four-game winning streak was ended on Saturday when they were defeated by the Orlando Magic by a score of 113-108 at home. Sunday, Los Angeles’ Kawhi Leonard scored an additional 24 points.

Trimmers lead trainer Tyronn Lue stayed in Los Angeles with a non-Coronavirus sickness. Since March 2, Norman Powell (shoulder) has not played.

To tie the season series, the Clippers must win both games against the Thunder this week. In October, the teams also played back-to-back games in Oklahoma City, with the Thunder winning by scores of 108-94 and 118-110. In those victories, Gilgeous and Alexander scored 57 points together.

On Sunday, the New Orleans Pelicans and the San Antonio Spurs both won despite suffering difficult defeats.

When they meet Tuesday night in New Orleans, they will try to build on that success.

On Friday, the Pelicans (34-37) led the host Rockets by 15 points with less than 10 minutes left, but rookie Jabari Smith Jr. hit a 3-pointer with less than a second left and the Pelicans lost 114-112 to the Rockets.

New Orleans was much more consistent when the teams met again two nights later in Houston. They took the lead in the first quarter, led by double digits for most of the game, and held off repeated Rockets attempts to win 117-107.

The Pelicans’ victory kept them in the middle of the Western Conference play-in tournament queue.

Sunday, the Pelicans led the Rockets by as many as 20 points. They saw their lead shrink to eight points with over six minutes left, but this time they kept the home team safe.

The Spurs had lost three straight games in overtime in which they had led by double digits, including a 29-point lead in the third quarter in a 126-120 defeat to Memphis on Friday.

However, San Antonio (19-52) prevailed 126-118 over the visiting Atlanta Hawks on Sunday after overcoming a 24-point deficit.

In part because the Spurs shot 58% from the field after the half, San Antonio outscored Atlanta 65-35 in the second half.

In the third quarter, the Spurs outscored the Hawks 39-20 and hit 8 of 12 3-pointers to pull within 103-100 at the break.

After winning in San Antonio, 129-110 on Nov. 23, 117-99 on Dec. 2, and 126-117 on Dec. 22 in New Orleans, New Orleans is attempting to sweep the season series.

The Brooklyn Nets and Cleveland Cavaliers met in the play-in tournament a year ago.

The Nets (39-32) are attempting to avoid a play-in game by remaining in the top six of the Eastern Conference, whereas the Cavaliers (45-28) are in a favorable position for the home court in the first round this time.

Beginning Tuesday night, when the teams play consecutive games in New York, Cleveland has the potential to strengthen its position while also having a negative impact on the Nets. Thursday night will be the second game in the set.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are two and a half games ahead of the fifth-place New York Knicks going into Monday’s games as they travel to Brooklyn. After losing three straight from February 15 to 24, the Cavaliers have won seven of their last ten games to maintain their fourth-place position.

Cleveland has scored at least 110 points in nine of its last 11 games, including the 117-94 victory over the Washington Wizards on Friday. It was the 12th time this season that the Cavaliers shot at least 55% from the field, even though they missed 15 of 19 3-point attempts.

Darius Garland added nine assists to his 24 points on 11-of-19 shooting in the victory on Friday. Despite shooting 1-of-5 from three-point range, where he is 6-for-26 in his past four games, Garland led the team in scoring.

Donovan Mitchell scored 20 focuses notwithstanding going 0-of-6 from 3-point range. Mitchell has scored 40 points in three of his last eight games, despite shooting just 1-of-19 from distance in those three games.

On December 26, Brooklyn defeated Cleveland 125-117, snapping a 12-game winning streak, to move into second place in the East. The team shot 57.3 percent of its shots. The Nets are currently one game ahead of the seventh-place Miami Heat, who are attempting to end their fourth four-game losing streak.

Between February 24 and March 1, Brooklyn went on a four-game losing streak, losing three games by double digits and allowing an average of 130 points per game. Following the skid, the Nets won five of their next six games, averaging 101.7 points in losses to Oklahoma City, Sacramento, and Denver.

The Nets lost their first game of the skid, 121-107, after blowing a 10-point halftime lead. However, in their next two games, against Sacramento and Denver, Brooklyn lost the game in the first half. The Nets trailed by 12 after the first quarter and 15 at halftime in Sunday’s 108-102 loss to the Nuggets, and only a late push made the score respectable.

In their last 15 games, the Nets have allowed 52.5 percent shooting and have been outrebounded 12 times.

Nic Claxton added 19 points and Mikal Bridges scored 23 points, marking his fifth consecutive game with at least 20 points. However, other players struggled to get into the flow of the game. Cameron Johnson scored 14, but he only made one of six attempts from three-point range. As a Net, he is shooting 33.6% (36-of-107) from behind the arc.

On Tuesday night, the Atlanta Hawks will attempt to complete a season sweep of the visiting Detroit Pistons. To maintain their lead in the race for the playoffs, the Atlanta Hawks will need to win against the cellar-dweller Detroit Pistons.

In Sunday’s 126-118 defeat to San Antonio, the Hawks wasted a 24-point lead and have now lost three of their last four games. Atlanta (35-36) is No. 8 in the East, three games behind No. 7 Miami and just half a game behind No. 9 games ahead of No. 1 Toronto and 1 1/2 games 10 Chicago prior to the games on Monday.

This will be Atlanta and Detroit’s last meeting. The Falcons dominated the initial two matches in Detroit and afterward the latest gathering, 130-105 on Dec. 23 in Atlanta.

Quin Snyder, the coach of Atlanta, said that his team needs to learn from its poor performance against the Spurs in the second half. The Hawks had a 83-61 halftime lead, but they only scored 35 points in the second half and 15 in the fourth.

Atlanta will require a re-visitation of structure by scoring pioneer Trae Youthful. Only the second time all season that he has not scored in the double digits was in the loss to the Spurs, when he scored just nine points. Due to a right-knee contusion, Young, who is averaging 26.7 points and 10.0 assists per game, was listed as questionable.

Saddiq Bey of Atlanta will also make his debut against his former team in this matchup. Bey, who was acquired from the Pistons at the deadline for trades, has played 14 games for Atlanta and has scored an average of 10.1 points while shooting 45.3% from three-point range.

Bey is falling off a horrible showing against San Antonio. In his last three games, he has not scored more than one point and has only made one of eight three-point attempts in that time.

The Pistons (16-56) have lost three straight and 14 of their last 15 games, including Sunday’s 112-100 defeat to Miami.

James Wiseman scored 22 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for the Pistons on Sunday. Wiseman has been averaging 13.8 points and 9.3 rebounds ever since he was acquired from Golden State at the trade deadline. Coach Dwane Casey said, “James played a hell of a game, but our transition defense is still tough” after he scored 12 points in the third quarter of Detroit’s loss on Sunday.

Marvin Bagley III returned to Detroit on Sunday. He returned after missing three games with a sore ankle and scored 14 points.

After striking Kevin Love of Miami in the third quarter, Jalen Duren’s status for Tuesday remains uncertain. Love needed four stitches, and Duren was checked out for a concussion after feeling woozy and never getting up off the floor. Love needed four stitches.

With left hamstring tightness, Atlanta’s Jalen Johnson has missed the last two games and will be out for at least another week.

On Tuesday, the Washington Wizards face the Orlando Magic, who are returning home from a difficult four-game road trip, in an effort to break a skid that could jeopardize their postseason hopes.

With Saturday’s 132-118 defeat to Sacramento, Washington (32-39) lost its fifth decision in six outings. As of Monday’s action, the Wizards were 1.5 games behind Chicago for the final Eastern Conference play-in tournament spot due to their recent slide.

Due to illness, Porzingis, who is averaging a career-high 22.8 points per game, did not play against the Kings. Prior to the match on Tuesday, he is listed as day-to-day.

After a three-game stretch in which he scored no more than 17 points in any one game, including seven in a 23-point loss to Cleveland on Friday, Kyle Kuzma scored 33 points against Sacramento.

In Washington’s final 11 games, it will likely be crucial to find consistency from its leading trio of Kuzma, Porzingis, and Bradley Beal, who are all averaging more than 21 points per game. In three of the five losses during the current skid, the Wizards scored fewer than their average of 112.8 points per game and failed to score 100 points twice.

In contrast, Orlando (29-43) enters Tuesday’s matchup having gone 2-6 overall and 1-3 on the road through the Western Conference. In those six defeats, the Magic gave up 124.3 points on average.

The Wizardry shut that stretch by restricting the Los Angeles Lakers to 111 focuses on Sunday, yet Orlando assembled only 105 – – its most minimal result since Feb. 27 – – in the last date of the excursion.

In the defeat, Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero each scored 21 points. This was the fifth time in the last eight games that an Orlando contest had been decided by a single digit. The Magic defeated Miami by 12 points in overtime in one of the two exceptions.

With an average of 20 points per game and the second-best rebounding average on the team (6.6 per game), Banchero is likely to win Rookie of the Year. As Banchero heads into the final lap, he can turn into the primary player from Orlando to win that honor since Mike Mill operator in 2000-01.

Devaun Lee Shocks Kiante Irving; Joey Turk Remains Undefeated

Pittsburgh, PA – Super Bantamweight contender Oleh Dovhun inched closer to a world title opportunity by making the second defense of the WBA NABA title with a 10-round unanimous decision over Juan Centeno in a fight that headlined a five-bout card at The Priory Grand Hall in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The card was promoted by Integrity Fighter Management and Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing.

Despite being cut on his left eyelid due to an accidental clash of head, Dovhun showed his class throughout the bout by boxing his way behind a consistent work-rate. Centeno hung in there, but Dovhun showed why he is a world-ranked contender and took the fight by scores of 100-90 on all cards.

Dovhun of Pittsburgh via Ukraine ups his perfect mark to 15-0. Centeno of Miami us 8-7-3.

Dovhun is promoted by Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing and managed by Integrity Fighter Management.

In the co-feature, Devaun Lee sent shockwaves by stopping previously undefeated hometown fighter Kiante Irving in round four of their six-round super middleweight bout.

Lee was able to withstand an early rush by Irving. Irving may have punched himself out as Lee started to take over in the second and third rounds. Lee started tagging Irving with flush shots until the bout was stopped at 2:03 of round four.

Lee of Queens, NY is 11-8-1 with six knockouts. Irving of Beaver Falls, PA falls to 11-1-1.

Joe Turk remained undefeated with a four-round unanimous decision over Isaiah Margheim in a heavyweight bout.
