DALLAS STARS POSTSEASON NOTES
TONIGHT’S GAME: With their backs against the wall, the Stars look to claw their way back into the series in Game 4 tonight at American Airlines Center. (ESPN, ESPN+, SN, CBC, TVAS, Radio: The Ticket 96.7-FM/1310-AM). The Stars enter tonight’s matchup with a 5-3 record at home in the playoffs. Should Dallas win, Game 5 will take place in Las Vegas on Saturday, May 27 (7 p.m. CT). This represents a rematch of the 2020 Western Conference Final, where the Stars earned a 4-1 series win en route to their first Stanley Cup Final in 20 years.

STARS-GOLDEN KNIGHTS PLAYOFF HISTORY

  • This marks the second all-time meeting between the Stars and Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The previous matchup between the two clubs was in the 2020 Conference Finals, a series won in five games by Dallas, which saw the first instance in the NHL’s modern era (since 1943-44) of a Conference Finals or Semifinals series opening with each team earning a shutout within the first two contests.
  • The Western Conference Final represents the fourth instance in the past 25 years of head coaches, both in their first season with a team, meeting in the penultimate round of the playoffs. The last occurrence was also between Dallas and Vegas in 2020 (DAL: Rick Bowness; VGK: Pete DeBoer). The others: 2010 (PHI: Peter Laviolette; MTL: Jacques Martin) and 1998 (WSH: Ron Wilson; BUF: Lindy Ruff).

WNBA Preview: Minnesota Lynx (0-2) at Phoenix Mercury (0-2)

Even though Brittney Griner is back on the court and playing like a seven-time All-Star, the Phoenix Mercury have lost their first two games.

Griner and the Mercury will endeavor to get in the triumph segment when they have the Minnesota Lynx, likewise 0-2, on Thursday night.

After missing last season and spending nearly ten months in a Russian prison, Griner played in her first two games and averaged 22.5 points and 8.0 rebounds.

She searched in excellent condition in Sunday’s 75-69 misfortune to the Chicago Sky by contributing 27 focuses, 10 bounce back and four hindered shots. In addition, she was overcome with emotion as she was warmly greeted at her first home game since the 2021 season.

Mercury mentor Vanessa Nygaard is stunned with how Griner is managing everything after her acclaimed experience.

In two games, Griner has hit 16 of 22 field goal attempts, but 10-time All-Star Diana Taurasi is only shooting 9 of 32, including 3 of 18 attempts from long range. Averaging 15.5 points is Taurasi, who turns 41 next month.

After losing to the Atlanta Dream 83-77 on Tuesday at home, Minnesota begins a three-game road trip.

Before Atlanta came back to win, the Lynx were 19 points ahead in the third quarter.

Collier, a double cross Elite player, is averaging 18.5 focuses. Due to giving birth to her daughter, she only appeared in four games during the season.

Precious stone Mill operator, the No. 2 by and large pick in the current year’s draft, is only 6-of-19 shooting while at the same time averaging 8.5 focuses.

WNBA Preview: Las Vegas Aces (1-0) at Los Angeles Sparks (1-0)

In a Commissioner’s Cup matchup on Thursday, the Los Angeles Sparks take on the defending champion Las Vegas Aces.

Last week, the Aces and Sparks both won easily in their season-opening games, with Las Vegas defeating the host Seattle 105-64 on Saturday. In Brittney Griner’s first game back in the league after being detained in Russia for over ten months, Los Angeles kicked off the season on Friday against Phoenix.

Five players scored in the double digits, including Zia Cooke, a first-round draft pick who made her WNBA debut with 14 points, as the Sparks prevailed 94-71 in the tense contest.

In the victory, Ogwumike scored 15 points, while her older sister Nneka Ogwumike led the way with 17 points. Karlie Samuelson had 13 points, while Lexie Brown had 14.

Cooke was on the South Carolina team that won the national championship two years ago, and Samuelson signed a hardship contract after being cut from the Los Angeles roster at first.

Las Vegas, the champion in 2022, presents the next chance.

Six Aces scored in double figures in their first game, demonstrating a lot of balance.

Kelsey Plum and Jackie Youthful each scored 23 focuses to lead the way. Chelsea Gray had 14 points, six rebounds, and six assists, A’ja Wilson had 13 points and 13 rebounds, and Alysha Clark scored 10 points by going 4-of-5 from the field.

Throughout its first two games, Las Vegas has made leadership a hot topic. Due to allegations of abuse leveled against former Ace Dearica Hamby, who is now with the Sparks, Coach Becky Hammon is serving a two-game suspension prior to Hamby’s trade this offseason.

During Hammon’s suspension, Tyler Marsh is in charge of a roster that includes established newcomers like Clark and Candace Parker.

Parker, who has been named to the All-WNBA team seven times and won two league MVP awards, had 12 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

NHL Morning Skate: Stanley Cup Playoffs Edition – May 25, 2023

0

* The Panthers and Hurricanes were tied or separated by a one-goal margin for all but 2:40 in the Eastern Conference Final, which ended with a Game 4 thriller that included an opening-minute goal, a multi-goal comeback, a tying marker by Carolina with 3:22 to play and then an NHL record-tying series clinching goal at 19:55 of the third period by Florida’s Matthew Tkachuk.

* The Panthers reached the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in 27 years – their only other trip came in 1996 – and will begin the championship series in either Las Vegas or Dallas. The Golden Knights currently hold a 3-0 series lead against the Stars in the Western Conference, which resumes tonight at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN+, ESPN, SN, TVAS, CBC.

* The Panthers became the third team in NHL history to eliminate three of the League’s top four teams in the same postseason, the third team in the NHL’s modern era (since 1943-44) to win three or more series after entering as the lowest-ranked team in the Stanley Cup Playoffs – all after spending only 28% of their season in a playoff spot.

CATS COMPLETE SWEEP, ADVANCE TO FINAL FOR SECOND TIME IN FRANCHISE HISTORY

Matthew Tkachuk tallied the series-clinching goal with 4.3 seconds remaining in regulation as Florida completed its first-ever sweep and clinched the second Stanley Cup Final berth in franchise history (also 1996).

* Florida advancing marked the third instance in the NHL’s expansion era (since 1967-68) where the lowest-seeded team reached the Final, following Montreal in 2021 and Nashville in 2017. The Panthers became the third team in League history to eliminate three of the NHL’s top four teams in the same postseason, joining the 1969 Canadiens (QF vs. NYR, No. 3; SF vs. BOS, No. 2; SCF vs. STL, No. 4) and 1980 Islanders (QF vs. BOS, No. 4; SF vs. BUF, No. 2; SCF vs. PHI, No. 1).

* Florida was in a playoff spot for only 28% of the regular season (54 of 190 days). They are the only team in the expansion era to reach the Final after spending less than 30% of the season in a playoff spot; the previous low was 32% by the 2019 Blues (en route to their Cup win).

* Florida went 27 yearsbetween Final appearances, which marked the fourth longest such gap by a franchise in NHL history behind St. Louis (49 years from 1970–2019), Detroit (29 years from 1966–1995) and Montreal (28 years from 1993–2021).

Click here to read the May 24 edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates, which features more notes on the Panthers advancing to the Final.

TKACHUK’S TALLY TIED FOR LATEST TO CLINCH A SERIES IN NHL HISTORY
Matthew Tkachuk tied the NHL record for latest series-clinching goal in regulation, a mark set by Nick Metz during Game 6 of the 1942 Semifinals when he scored to put the Maple Leafs ahead 3-2 against the Rangers (and also secured a spot in the Stanley Cup Final).

* Tkachuk tallied three of his League-leading four game-winning goals this postseason in the Eastern Conference Final and became the seventh different player in NHL history with three or more during the round before the Final. Tkachuk, who put Florida up 2-0 at 10:23 of the first period, became the second player in franchise history with multiple goals in a series-clinching win (also Brandon Montour in Game 7 of 2023 R1).

* Tkachuk became the second player in franchise history with a series-clinching goal to send Florida to the Final, joining Tom Fitzgerald in Game 7 of the 1996 Conference Finals. Fitzgerald is the father of Tkachuk’s teammate, Casey, who has appeared in five contests with the Panthers this season including Game 4 of the First Round.

BOBROVSKY WAS A BULWARK IN PANTHERS’ CREASE AGAINST HURRICANES
Sergei Bobrovsky made 36 saves to conclude the Eastern Conference Final with a 4-0 record in four appearances (1.12 GAA, .966 SV%, 1 SO), extend his winning streak to five games and improve to 11-1 in his last 12 outings overall.

* Bobrovsky recorded a shutout sequence of 133:11 dating to Game 2 and made 72 consecutive saves in that span, with the run snapped when Paul Stastny cut the Hurricanes’ deficit to 2-1 on Wednesday. Bobrovsky’s shutout streak was the second longest in franchise playoff history behind John Vanbiesbrouck in 1996 (141:31 from Game 34 of SCF).

* Bobrovsky made a franchise-record 63 saves during Florida’s quadruple-overtime victory in Game 1 and concluded the Eastern Conference Final with 168 overall. That marked the most in NHL history during a four-game sweep, eclipsing the previous high of 165 set by Jean-Sebastien Giguere with the Mighty Ducks during the 2003 Conference Quarterfinals.

BETTMAN RECEIVES SPORTS BUSINESS JOURNAL LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

After celebrating his 30th anniversary on the job in February and presiding over more than 55% of all games in League history, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman received the Sports Business Journal Lifetime Achievement Award on Wednesday. It was presented during the national weekly trade magazine’s 2023 Sports Business Awards at the New York Marriott Marquis, where Emmy-winning actor and Blues fan Jon Hamm introduced the Commissioner.

* The SBJ listed among Bettman’s accomplishments the growth of the NHL during his tenure from 24 to 32 teams and an increase in League revenue from about $400 million per season to a record $5.2 billion last season – a number that has since risen to $6 billion. Click hereto read about Bettman’s achievement courtesy of NHL.com’s Mike Morreale.

* Also during the ceremony, the NHL won the award for Sports Breakthrough of the Year for its Digitally Enhanced Dasherboards, advertising technology that debuted this season.

NILL, SWEENEY AND ZITO VOTED FINALISTS FOR GM OF THE YEAR AWARD

Voting was conducted among the NHL general managers and a panel of League executives, print and broadcast media at the conclusion of the Second Round of the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs. NBA Playoffs Eastern Conference Finals Game 5 Preview: Miami Heat (3-1) at Boston Celtics (1-3)

0

Members of the Boston Celtics were talking about a return trip to South Florida mere moments after the team averted a sweep at the hands of the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference finals.

While talk is cheap, the conversation will become real if the Celtics fend off elimination for the second consecutive contest on Thursday when they host the Heat in Game 5 in Boston.

Jayson Tatum scored 25 of his 33 points in the second half Tuesday, with 14 coming during a third quarter in which Boston outscored Miami by a 38-23 margin. All told, Tatum made 11 of 15 shots from the floor after intermission.

Tatum wasn’t alone, either. The Celtics shot 51.2 percent from the floor (43 of 84) for the game and 40 percent from 3-point range (18 of 45).

TD Garden hasn’t been kind to the home tenants in the postseason, however. The Celtics have lost five of their past seven games in Boston.

That said, the Heat had won all six of their home playoff games before Tuesday’s tumble in Miami.

The Heat were denied in their first opportunity to punch their ticket to the NBA Finals for the second time in four seasons. They also were thwarted in their first chance to join the 1998-99 New York Knicks as the lone eighth-seeded teams in the league to advance to the NBA Finals.

Jimmy Butler, who recorded team highs in points (29) and rebounds (nine) on Tuesday, refused to get too down after seeing the team’s initial opportunities go by the boards.

Caleb Martin made his first six shots from the floor on Tuesday and scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half.

Stars’ Benn Suspended Two Games for Cross-Checking

0

NEW YORK – Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn has been suspended for two games for cross-checking Vegas Golden Knights forward Mark Stone during Game 3 of the Western Conference Final in Dallas on Tuesday, May 23, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

If the term of the suspension is not fully served during the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the remaining game will be served at the beginning of the 2023-24 regular season.

The incident occurred at 1:42 of the first period. Benn was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for cross-checking.
