New York Sirens blank Ottawa Charge behind as Kayle Osbourne earns first career shutout

OTTAWA, ON – New York rookie Kayle Osborne earned her first career shutout to backstop the Sirens to a 3-0 victory over the Ottawa Charge at TD Place on Monday night. The goaltender turned aside all 31 shots she faced, keeping Ottawa off the scoresheet for the first time this season. The Sirens opened the scoring on their first shot of the game, just two minutes in, on a bouncing puck off the stick of Chloé Aurard. Ten minutes later, Alex Carpenter scored on the power play to double New York’s lead, giving her team a two-goal advantage heading into the first intermission. After a scoreless second period, Jessie Eldridge added another power play marker – her second point of the night after earning an assist on Carpenter’s goal – to extend the Sirens’ lead to three. The Charge made a last-minute push to find the twine in the dying minutes of the game, but Osborne held on to lead her team to a shutout victory. Emerance Maschmeyer stopped 17 of 20 shots between the pipes at the other end of the ice for Ottawa in her league-leading tenth start of the season. The win propels New York past Ottawa into third place in the PWHL standings, while the Charge fall into fourth.

QUOTES

Sirens Forward Alex Carpenter on the team’s bounce back win: “I think that’s exactly what we wanted out of a first period response after our last game. We knew we didn’t play to the level we could and tonight we showed the way we wanted to play and how we can play. She [Kayle Osborne] played amazingly–– we just felt so confident with her behind us and sometimes the nerves can probably get the better of you playing in your hometown and in front of so many family and friends. She took the excitement of it.”

Sirens Goaltender Kayle Osborne on her first PWHL shutout: “I think it’s cool to do this in your hometown and we really needed a big game on the road tonight. We are at the end of a long road trip, so I think our team’s play tonight was great.”

Ottawa Head Coach Carla MacLeod on her team’s scoring struggles: “First period, I feel we didn’t show up for that one. That’s disappointing. We’ve got to be excited to be at home and get our fans into the game. I felt like we didn’t move our feet overly well in the first but certainly made that adjustment the rest of the game and I really like what we produced. Yes, you’re trying to score goals all the time and, for now, we’re not getting any bounces or any luck, but we’re just getting a little bit more. We can be grittier in front of the net and just be quicker to shoot but we got to 30 shots tonight.”

Charge defender Jincy Roese on feeling the pressure to score: “It’s professional hockey. If you don’t score goals, you’re not going to win games. So, there’s always that pressure to score. But we wouldn’t be here if we couldn’t handle a little bit of pressure. So again, we’re in a good spot. We have a great group and we’re building. And if I can think back to last year, there’s a couple teams that weren’t in good positions this time of year and that were on a really bad losing streak. We’re not in that position at all and our group is sticking together. What we’ve got in that room is special so it’s bigger than wins and losses.”

NOTABLES

Kayle Osborne earned her first career shutout, becoming the second rookie goaltender to record a shutout in the PWHL all-time, following Charge goaltender Gwyneth Philips‘ clean sheet on Jan. 21, 2025. Osborne, who grew up in Ottawa and now resides in nearby Westport, ON, made her hometown debut in tonight’s game.

Osborne is the youngest goaltender to post a shutout in PWHL history at 22 years, 10 months, and 30 days. She overtakes Philips who recorded her shutout at 24 years, 4 months, 4 days.

New York has recorded three shutouts in 12 games so far this season, matching the league-leading total achieved by both Toronto and Minnesota in the 24-game inaugural season.

The Sirens’ league-leading power play improved to 24.4% after netting two power play goals in the game. New York has scored multiple power play goals in three games this season, picking up the win all three times.

Jessie Eldridge recorded her fourth multi-point game of the season (1G, 1A) and is now one of four active players in the league averaging at least one point per game. The Sirens forward is now tied for second among Sirens players in points with 12 on the season (4G, 8A) and sits tied for third in league scoring.

Alex Carpenter scored her sixth goal of the season –– her second on the power play –– and is now tied for the league lead in goals. She is tied with Eldridge for the second-most points among Sirens players with 12 (6G, 6A) while tied for third in the PWHL scoring race. Carpenter and Eldridge also co-lead the PWHL in power play points with six apiece.

Sarah Fillier recorded her eighth assist of the season and extends her point streak to four games, tying her career high. She leads all Sirens players in points with 13 (5G, 8A), sitting second in the league – and first among all rookies – in the category.

Abby Roque tallied her fourth helper of the season and now has points in three consecutive games, tying her career record point streak. The Sirens forward’s only other three-game point streak was last season from Jan. 5-14.

Chloé Aurard scored her second goal of the season for New York in her twelfth game, passing her total from the PWHL’s inaugural season in which she played 21 games. The Sirens forward now has four points on the season (2G, 2A), two of which have come against Ottawa (1G, 1A).

Maja Nylen Persson tallied her fourth assist of the season for New York and is now tied for third among PWHL rookies in the category.

Ella Shelton has a point on the power play in back-to-back games for New York. The Sirens defender is now second among New York blue liners in points on the power play with three (1G, 2A), only behind teammate Micah Zandee Hart (1G, 3A).

New York scored on their first shot on net for the second time this season –– the first time coming on Jan. 5 in a 5-0 win over Minnesota. Only five games this season have seen a team’s first shot resulting in a goal, with Montréal and Minnesota being the only other teams to accomplish this feat.

The Sirens won their sixth game of the season when hitting the score sheet first, improving to a 4-2-0-1 record when scoring the game’s first goal. Their only loss this season when scoring first was against Ottawa on Jan. 7, in a 3-2 loss.

Ottawa was held off the scoresheet for the first time this season, and for the second time in the team’s history. The first time was on April 27, 2024, in a 2-0 loss to Montréal.

The Charge outshot their opponent for the first time in five games. The last time they did so was also against New York, on Jan. 7.

Ottawa fired 12 shots on net in the first period, tying their season high shot total in the opening frame. The first time the Charge reached this mark this season was also against New York, in a 3-2 win on Jan. 7, when they finished the game with a total of 37 shots on net.

Kateřina Mrázová made her return to the Charge lineup after missing five games with a lower-body injury. She recorded 6:15 on the ice in tonight’s game.

Shelton played a season-high 24:46 on ice for the Sirens, leading all players in the category. Aneta Tejralová also finished with a season-high 21:34 on ice for Ottawa, the most time among all Charge players.

Emily Clark led all players with four shots on net in the game. Eldridge, Roque and Shelton each recorded three shots on net, leading all Sirens players in the category.
