FLUSHING, N.Y. – The New York Mets have announced the signing of left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea to a three-year contract.
“Sean was a crucial part of our success last season,” said David Stearns, President of Baseball Operations. “He led the rotation with impressive on-field performance and showcased remarkable character and composure in the clubhouse. We’re excited to see him continue to thrive in the coming years.”
Manaea, 32, had an outstanding season with the Mets, going 12-6 with a 3.47 ERA (70 ER/181.2 IP), 63 walks, and 184 strikeouts in 32 starts. He set a career-high in innings pitched (181.2), tied career-highs in wins (12) and starts (32), and recorded the second-highest strikeout total of his career. Manaea’s 3.47 ERA was his lowest for a full season, and he was one of eight pitchers to make 32 or more starts with an ERA below 3.50. He held right-handed batters to a .190 average, tied for the fourth-lowest in the majors.
From July 1 onward, Manaea led the majors in innings pitched (105.1), was second in quality starts (12), and ranked sixth in strikeouts (108) and WHIP (0.93). He completed at least 7.0 innings in nine of his 32 starts, tying for the sixth-most in the National League.
During the postseason, the Indiana native made four starts, going 2-1 with a 4.74 ERA (10 ER/19.0 IP), eight walks, and 19 strikeouts. He earned wins in Game 3 of the NLDS against Philadelphia and Game 2 of the NLCS against Los Angeles.
Manaea was honored with the Ben Epstein/Dan Castellano “Good Guy” award by the New York Chapter of the BBWAA for his friendliness, outgoing nature, and cooperation with the media.
In his nine major league seasons with the A’s, Padres, Giants, and Mets, Manaea has compiled a 77-62 record with a 4.00 ERA (573 ER/1184.1 IP), 335 walks, and 1,109 strikeouts. He was originally selected by the Kansas City Royals in the first round (34th overall) of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft.
