NEW YORK – New York City FC announced today the acquisition of midfielder Nicolás Fernández Mercau from Spanish club Elche CF. The Argentine joins the Club as a Designated Player on a contract through 2029.
Fernández Mercau, 25, becomes NYCFC’s tenth Designated Player and will officially join the squad pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa, with the move set to finalize when the transfer window opens on July 24.
During his three seasons with Elche CF, the midfielder appeared in 97 matches across LaLiga, LaLiga 2, and the Copa del Rey, registering 11 goals and 12 assists. In the 2024–25 campaign, Fernández Mercau was instrumental in Elche’s promotion to LaLiga, co-leading the team in goal contributions in league play and finishing atop the club’s overall scoring chart with 17 total goal contributions across all competitions.
