NEW YORK – New York City FC has announced that midfielder James Sands recently underwent surgery to address a complex right ankle injury, which involved a fractured fibula and a torn medial collateral ligament.

Sands sustained the injury just before the final whistle during FC St. Pauli’s match against SC Freiburg. The surgery was performed at the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf in Hamburg, Germany. As a result, Sands will be sidelined indefinitely.

Since joining the German Bundesliga side FC St. Pauli in January of this year, Sands has made seven appearances for the club.

Everyone at New York City FC extends their best wishes to James Sands for a speedy and successful recovery.
