NBA Preview: Memphis Grizzlies (1-0) vs Houston Rockets (0-1)

Memphis guard Ja Morant made an impressive return in the season opener on Wednesday, showcasing why the anticipation was justified. After missing 73 games last season due to suspension and injury, Morant delivered 22 points, 10 assists, and five rebounds in the Grizzlies’ 126-124 win over the Utah Jazz.

Santi Aldama also stood out, stepping in for Jaren Jackson Jr. (hamstring) with 27 points—just one shy of his career high—and five rebounds. Aldama’s perimeter shooting is a key asset for Memphis, complementing Morant’s aggressive drives. He drained five 3-pointers against the Jazz, highlighting a potential strong partnership.

Coach Taylor Jenkins utilized an 11-man rotation, with all players recording double-digit minutes. The Grizzlies’ depth is noteworthy, providing crucial support for Morant’s offensive efforts.

On the other side, the Houston Rockets, who promoted their depth before the season, fell short in their 110-105 loss to the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday. Despite an 18-point first-half lead, only one reserve, Amen Thompson, scored in double figures, finishing with 13 points and four rebounds in 21 minutes. The other reserves combined for 15 points on 7-for-16 shooting, with Cam Whitmore being the only reserve to post a positive plus/minus at +4.

Looking ahead to Friday, the Grizzlies will need to maintain their balanced offensive attack when they face the Rockets on the road.
