MMA Preview: Charles Oliveira (34-10-1) vs Michael Chandler (23-8)

Charles Oliveira vs. Michael Chandler 2 is shaping up to be as thrilling as their first encounter. With both fighters in their mid-to-late 30s, the UFC 309 co-main event could be a pivotal moment for either to reclaim the spotlight. A win on November 16 could potentially earn the victor a future title shot.

Charles Oliveira (34-10-1) is celebrated as one of the greatest grapplers in UFC history. Holding the record for the most submission wins in UFC history with 16, he’ll be looking to make it 17 if he can take Chandler down to the mat.

Their previous bout ended with Oliveira securing a TKO victory, but this time, “Do Bronx” might revert to his grappling roots for a submission finish. A win here would get him back on track after a split decision loss to Arman Tsarukyan last April, where he attempted four submissions without success. Despite this setback, Oliveira is still ranked second in the UFC Lightweight Rankings, and a victory over the No.7 lightweight could reignite his title aspirations.

Michael Chandler’s MMA career is impressive, boasting an overall record of 23-8. However, his UFC record stands at just 2-3, with one of those losses coming from Oliveira. Chandler’s last fight was in 2022, where he lost to Dustin Poirier via submission. Yet, he seems battle-ready, as evidenced by recent training footage on social media. The 38-year-old appears in top shape, prepared to fight for five rounds on November 16.

However, Chandler’s athleticism and determination might not be enough against Oliveira. The Brazilian’s knack for securing submissions under pressure could pose a significant threat if the fight goes to the ground.
