Minnesota Wild sign Veteran Defenseman Jack Johnson to Professional Tryout

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Wild announced today that the club has signed defenseman Jack Johnson to a professional tryout (PTO) ahead of training camp. The move was confirmed by President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Bill Guerin.

Johnson Brings Experience and Championship Pedigree

Johnson, 38, appeared in 41 games last season with the Columbus Blue Jackets, registering six assists. The 6-foot-1, 227-pound blueliner from Indianapolis, Indiana, enters camp with one of the most extensive resumes in the NHL:

  • 1,228 career NHL games
  • 342 points (77 goals, 265 assists)
  • 639 penalty minutes
  • 1,839 blocked shots
  • 19 NHL seasons (2006–2025)

Johnson has suited up for seven NHL franchises:

  • Los Angeles Kings (2006–12)
  • Columbus Blue Jackets (2012–18, 2024–25)
  • Pittsburgh Penguins (2018–20)
  • New York Rangers (2020–21)
  • Colorado Avalanche (2021–23, 2023–24)
  • Chicago Blackhawks (2023)

He’s also played in 57 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, tallying 21 points (5G, 16A), 30 PIM, and 85 blocked shots, and was part of the Colorado Avalanche’s 2022 Stanley Cup-winning roster.

Collegiate & International Highlights

Before turning pro, Johnson played two seasons at the University of Michigan, where he totaled 71 points (26G, 45A). Internationally, he’s represented Team USA in multiple tournaments, including the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where the U.S. earned a silver medal.

Johnson was originally selected third overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2005 NHL Draft.
