MGCB Director Henry Williams Urges Residents to Bet Responsibly on Super Bowl LIX

As Super Bowl LIX approaches, set to take place at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Sunday, February 9, the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) is urging sports fans and bettors to practice responsible betting and to place wagers only through authorized, legal sportsbook operators.

“Each year, the Super Bowl unites millions of fans, football lovers, and bettors around the world,” said MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams. “As we come together to watch the game, let’s remember the importance of responsible betting to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.”

According to Legal Sports Report, nearly 225 million Americans in 40 states and territories have access to legal Super Bowl betting in their local markets this year. It’s estimated that nationwide Super Bowl betting revenue could surpass $100 million for sportsbooks, with the total betting handle in regulated U.S. markets expected to rise by over 15%, setting a new record with over $1.5 billion in wagers.

Before placing any Super Bowl bets, here are a few essential tips for potential bettors to keep in mind:

  • Set a Budget: Establish a betting budget that aligns with your financial situation. Set realistic limits on how much you’re willing to wager and stick to those limits throughout the game.
  • Bet Responsibly: Remember, sports betting is a form of entertainment, not a surefire way to make money. Only wager what you can comfortably afford to lose, ensuring it doesn’t impact your financial well-being or other obligations.
  • Know the Rules: Familiarize yourself with the rules of sports betting, the odds, and the types of bets available. Educating yourself helps you make informed decisions and reduces potential risks.
  • Use Authorized Sportsbook Operators: Always bet through legal, licensed sportsbooks for a secure and fair experience. Unlicensed sites can expose you to risks like identity theft, lost deposits, or unpaid winnings.

Michigan residents gambling online can set limits on deposits, wagers, and time spent on authorized gaming platforms. These self-imposed limits can only be adjusted with 24 hours’ notice.

Both gaming platforms and the MGCB provide self-exclusion options. To learn more about self-exclusion, visit the responsible gaming or help sections of an authorized operator’s website. Additionally, the MGCB offers statewide self-exclusion for all legal, regulated sites through the Responsible Gaming Database for online gaming, as well as the Disassociated Persons List for the three commercial Detroit casinos — MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown.

The MGCB also provides a wealth of information and resources on responsible gaming at Michigan.gov/MGCB under the “Responsible Gaming” page. For more tips and guidance, visit DontRegretTheBet.org. The agency encourages Michigan residents to explore these resources and call 888-223-3044 to speak with an MGCB Responsible Gaming Section Representative for additional support.
