Match Preview: Revolution Visit New York Red Bulls on Saturday

HARRISON, N.J.  – The New England Revolution (2-7-1; 7 pts.) will look for a second straight win on the road this Saturday night against I-95 rivals the New York Red Bulls (4-2-5; 17 pts.), a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff at Red Bull Arena. The match is available to watch on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app in English and Spanish. Listen on the radio on 98.5 The Sports Hub HD2 (WBZ-FM), with Brad Feldman and Charlie Davies on the call, and on 1260 AM “Nossa Radio USA” in Portuguese.

New England registered its first road victory of the 2024 MLS campaign last weekend, blanking Chicago Fire FC in a 1-0 shutout win at Soldier Field. The Revolution’s attack was led by forward Tomás Chancalay, who netted the game-winning goal with a left-footed strike from distance in the 62nd minute. Chancalay, who appeared on the MLS Team of the Matchday bench for his performance, has now scored in consecutive league matches for the first time in his career. The 25-year-old from Argentina has netted eights goals in 21 regular season games since his arrival midway through the 2023 season. In 2024, Chancalay leads the team with six goals in all competitions.

New England and New York will meet for the first of two contests this season. The Revolution lead the all-time series against their fellow MLS Original club, 35-31-17, including four victories in the last seven encounters. The Revolution recorded a 1-0 win in the most recent meeting on Aug. 30, 2023, with forward Giacomo Vrioni scoring the game-winning goal. The Red Bulls are winless in their last four games, including a 6-2 defeat to Inter Miami CF last weekend. Midfielder Lewis Morgan leads the squad with seven goals, while Belgian forward Dante Vanzeir has distributed a team-best six assists. Midfielder Emil Forsberg, a former Bundesliga fixture who represented Sweden in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, owns three goals and two assists in his debut MLS campaign.

Revolution midfielder Carles Gil, who has played every minute of the MLS season to date, enters the weekend with eight career assists in as many meetings with the Red Bulls. Gil needs only one more goal involvement to reach 100 for his MLS career, a feat only three other Revolution players have reached. The three-time MLS All-Star owns a team-high three goals and one assist on the season and ranks second in the league with 36 key passes this season, just one shy of the league lead.

Last week in Chicago, the Revolution turned to newly acquired goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič in between the posts, as the 30-year-old suited up for his club debut. The Slovenian made three saves en route to his ninth career shutout, the team’s second of the season. Ivačič’s performance was punctuated by a highlight-reel denial of Chicago midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri’s free kick attempt in the second half. Ivačič, the MLS leader in saves in 2022 when he started 32 games for Portland, will reach 5,000 MLS minutes played with a start in this weekend’s match.

In central defense, Xavier Arreaga collected his second consecutive start since joining New England in April. He paired with New York native Henry Kessler, who is eyeing his 10th consecutive league start. Meanwhile, midfielder Matt Polster enters the contest on the cusp of a personal milestone as he prepares to make his 100th regular season start with New England.
