Match Preview: NJ/NY Gotham FC Travel to Washington Spirit

HARRISON, NJ – NJ/NY Gotham FC travel to Audi Field to take on the Washington Spirit on Saturday (1 p.m. ET; CBS). Saturday will be Gotham FC’s third road game in four matches so far this season. 

Gotham FC is coming off a 1-1 draw against the Kansas City Current in the club’s first home match of the season. After going down 1-0, Gotham FC eventually found the equalizer in the 52nd minute, when Esther finished a header from a Yazmeen Ryan corner kick. The goal marked Esther’s fourth goal in eight regular season games at Gotham FC. 

Saturday’s match will be the 36th all-time meeting between the two clubs. The Spirit have the edge with an overall record of 15-12-9 and have a 7-5-6 record against Gotham FC on the Spirit’s home field. Gotham FC will be looking to win back-to-back games against the Spirit since Gotham FC won 2-0 at Red Bull Arena on Sept. 16.  

The Spirit currently sit third in the standings with a 3-0-1 record and nine points. Most recently, Washington picked up three points on the road against the Houston Dash. After going down 1-0 early in the first half, the Spirit had three different goal scorers to help lead to a win 3-1. Saturday’s match will be the Spirit’s third home match this season.
