The Kansas City Royals announced today they acquired right-handed pitcher Mason Black from the San Francisco Giants for right-handed pitcher Logan Martin. Black was designated for assignment by the Giants last week. Including Black, Kansas City’s Major League Reserve List is now at 37.

Black, 25, had just one stint with the Giants in 2025 and made his only appearance of the season on July 4 vs. the Athletics in Sacramento, where he covered 4.0 innings in relief and struck out 5 batters.

He spent the remainder of this season with the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, going 3-10 with a 5.81 ERA (77 ER in 119.1 IP) over 30 appearances (24 starts). He recorded 114 strikeouts (8.6 K/9), which ranked 9th most among all Giants minor leaguers this year.

Black debuted with San Francisco in 2024 and appeared in 9 games (8 starts) while pitching to a 6.44 ERA (26 ER in 36.1 IP) with 31 strikeouts.

He was selected by the Giants in the 3rd round of the 2021 Draft out of Lehigh University (Pa.). He made his Major League debut on May 6, 2024 at Citizens Bank Park, which is approximately two hours south of his hometown of Archibald, Pa.

Since the start of 2022, he’s recorded 492 strikeouts over 439.1 innings pitched (10.1 K/9) in 103 minor league games (97 starts), leading all Giants farmhands over that span.
