Dutch Gambling Authority Cracks Down on Illegal Advertising in Media

The Netherlands Gambling Authority (Ksa) is intensifying efforts to stop the promotion of illegal gambling offerings in both online and print media channels. In response to ongoing reports, the regulator has begun issuing advisory letters to media outlets, warning against content that encourages betting on platforms not linked to Cruks, the national self-exclusion registry.

Cruks allows individuals to voluntarily block their access to licensed gambling platforms, making promotional content for non-Cruks casinos especially harmful to vulnerable consumers. With public safety at stake, the Ksa is ramping up enforcement throughout the entire advertising chain.

This enhanced strategy goes beyond media publishers—it now targets marketing agencies that distribute these articles for profit. The Ksa intends to report such agencies to relevant oversight bodies, including the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) and the Dutch Advertising Code Foundation (SRC). In addition, trade associations representing the newspaper industry will be consulted to clarify acceptable practices and foster better compliance across editorial teams.

By broadening its outreach and enforcement scope, the Ksa aims to increase awareness, prevent future violations, and halt the spread of content promoting unauthorized gambling products. Where necessary, the regulator will impose sanctions, including financial penalties.
