Dodgers activate Connor Brogdon

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers activated right-handed pitcher Connor Brogdon and optioned right-handed Gus Varland to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Brogdon, 29, will be added to the roster after being acquired via trade from the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday afternoon in exchange for minor league left-handed pitcher Benony Robles. He made three appearances, allowing six runs in 2.0 innings for the Phillies this year. He was in his fifth season with Philadelphia (2020-24) and was a combined 10-8 with a 3.88 ERA in 142 games (two starts). He fanned 146 batters in 144 innings while limiting hitters to a .235 batting average against. He was drafted by the Phillies in 2017 in the 10th round of the First Year Player Draft out of Lewis-Clark State.

Varland, 28, tossed 0.1 innings last night, allowing two runs before the rain delay in Chicago. He has made two appearances, allowing two runs (one earned) in 0.2 innings. He is in second Major League season, and he has a 6.86 ERA in 18 games with a 1-1 record. With Triple-A Oklahoma City, he allowed two runs in 3.2 innings with four strikeouts this season. In his minor league career, he is a combined 10-13 with 230 strikeouts in 212.1 innings in 113 games (37 starts). He was originally drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 14th round of the 2018 First Year Player Draft out of Concordia-St. Paul University.
