CLEVELAND, OH – The Cleveland Guardians today announced the following transactions relative to the Major League roster:

Recalled INF Angel Martínez (#1) from AAA Columbus.

Placed INF Gabriel Arias on the Family Medical Emergency List.

Martínez, 22, batted .333 (20-for-60) with 4 doubles, 3 home runs, 11 RBI and a .988 OPS in 17 games across 2 stints with AAA Columbus this season. The switch-hitting infielder began 2024 on Cleveland’s 10-day Injured List with a right foot contusion (suffered March 14), played 3 games with the Clippers in early April on a rehab assignment, then suffered a left hamate fracture on Apr. 13 that landed him on the 60-day Injured List. Since returning to Columbus on May 31, Martínez ranks 7th in the International League with a 1.031 OPS, slugging 3 homers and driving in 11 runs in that span. He has started at 5 different positions with the Clippers this season (3B – 7; 2B – 4; SS – 2; CF – 2; DH – 1).

The Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native was signed by Cleveland as an amateur free agent on July 2, 2018 and has appeared in 410 MiLB games across 5 levels of the club’s Player Development System. Named an organizational All-Star by MLB.com in 2023, Martínez is the son of former MLB catcher Sandy Martínez, who played 218 MLB games from 1995-2004, including one for Cleveland in 2004.

Martínez will wear No. 1 and is slated to make his MLB debut.
