Chicago Cubs Announce Roster Moves

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs have announced several roster adjustments, including the signing of infielder Nicky Lopez to a one-year major league contract and the selection of left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz’s contract. Corresponding moves include the optioning of right-handed pitcher Gavin Hollowell to Triple-A Iowa, the transfer of left-handed pitcher Justin Steele to the 60-day IL, and the designation of infielder Gage Workman for assignment.

Nicky Lopez Joins the Cubs

Lopez, 30, recently appeared in four games (one start) with the Angels this season, going 0-for-6. Across his career, he has compiled a .247 batting average (521-for-2,110) with 83 doubles, 18 triples, seven home runs, 152 RBI, and 47 stolen bases in 672 career games across seven seasons with Kansas City (2019-2023), Atlanta (2023), Chicago – A.L. (2024), and Los Angeles – A.L. (2025).

Lopez previously signed a minor league contract with the Cubs on February 7 with an invitation to Spring Training but opted out on March 21. He later joined the Angels on March 25 before electing free agency following his designation for assignment on April 18.

Drew Pomeranz Added to the Pitching Staff

Pomeranz, 36, posted a 4.66 ERA (5 ER/9.2 IP) with two saves in nine outings for Triple-A Tacoma (Seattle) this season. Over his 11-season MLB career, Pomeranz has pitched for Colorado (2011-13), Oakland (2014-15), San Diego (2016, 2020-21), Boston (2016-2018), San Francisco (2019), and Milwaukee (2019), accumulating an 8-9 record, nine saves, a 3.91 ERA (373 ER/858.1 IP), and 882 strikeouts across 289 games (140 starts).

The Cubs acquired Pomeranz from Seattle on April 21 in exchange for cash considerations.
