PFL Notes
- Stats Perform named Dayton linebacker Gideon Lampron its FCS Defensive Player of the Week for Week 1. It was the first national weekly honor won by a Flyers player since 2021 (Jake Chisholm).
- PFL teams went 5-4 during Week 1. Dayton’s win against St. Francis was the league’s first against the Northeast Conference since 2018. San Diego’s win against Cal Poly was the league’s first against the Big Sky Conference since 2017.
- Defending champion Drake saw its home opener washed out at halftime last week, and so begins its 2024 season this week at Big Sky foe Eastern Washington.
- Marist was the only PFL team to sit out Week 1, meaning head coach Mike Willis makes his Red Foxes debut in Week 1 against Georgetown, which defeated Davidson in Week 1.
- Jason Woodman, the PFL’s other first-year head coach, won his debut against Central State last week. The Eagles host Kentucky Christian in Week 2.
- In Week 1, Division II Sioux Falls snapped St. Thomas’s 32-game home win streak. The Tommies will host Northern Iowa in St. Paul after the Panthers defeated Valparaiso.
- Butler and Valparaiso also face FCS foes in Week 2. Butler travels to Murray State to help the Racers open their home schedule and 100th season. Valparaiso heads east to face nationally ranked Youngstown State, which is also opening its home schedule.
- The PFL’s coaches picked Drake to win the 2024 PFL title after winning the 2023 title, their seventh PFL championship and first since 2012. The Bulldogs received eight of the 11 first-place votes from the league’s coaches. St. Thomas was second in the preseason poll, followed by Butler and San Diego.
- Drake defensive end Finn Claypool, the reigning PFL Defensive Player of the Year, was named to the Buck Buchanan Award Preseason Watch List presented by Stats Perform. He also was named to the Stats Perform All-America Team.
- Davidson running back Mari Adams and Drake quarterback Luke Bailey were named to the 35-player Walter Payton Watch Award Watch List, also presented by Stats Perform.
