BEAUMONT — Sam Houston will play another game closer to home this Sunday as they head to the Neches Arena to face long-time rival Lamar.

The Bearkats and the Cardinals have faced off 67 times since 1956, competing as members of the Southland Conference and the WAC since both teams moved up to the Division I level. Even after Sam Houston’s move to Conference USA last season, they lead the series 37-30.

This season, Sam Houston holds a 1-2 record with mixed results.

A slow start led to a 91-75 loss at Nevada in their season opener, with the Bearkats falling behind 15-2 in the opening minutes. They bounced back with a commanding 91-62 win at Tarleton, but then suffered a 37-point loss at No. 12 Baylor on Tuesday.

Injuries have been a challenge for Sam Houston early in the season. All-conference forward Cameron Huefner was injured at Tarleton and missed the game against Baylor, while guard Damon Nicholas Jr. has yet to make his season debut.

Sunday’s game is set to tip off at 4 p.m. It will be streamed on ESPN+ and the audio broadcast will be available on BSN.
