Club selects right-handed pitcher Michael Fulmer from Triple-A Worcester

BOSTON, MA — The Boston Red Sox have announced that right-handed pitcher Richard Fitts has been placed on the 15-Day Injured List due to a right pectoral strain. In his place, the team has called up right-handed pitcher Michael Fulmer from Triple-A Worcester, adding him to the active Major League roster. Fulmer will don jersey number 51.

This move keeps the Red Sox’s 40-man roster fully occupied at 40 players.

Fitts, 25, exited yesterday’s game against the Chicago White Sox after delivering an impressive 5.0 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing only two hits while issuing one walk and striking out five. Across three starts this season, the right-hander holds a 0-2 record with a 3.18 ERA (6 ER/17.0 IP). A native of Alabama, Fitts was originally drafted by the New York Yankees in the sixth round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft and has since compiled a career 2.39 ERA (10 ER/37.2 IP) with 22 strikeouts in seven Major League starts for Boston spanning the 2024-25 seasons.

Fulmer, 32, joins the Red Sox roster after an impressive showing in Worcester, where he recorded a 3.09 ERA (4 ER/11.2 IP) and struck out 18 batters over three games (two starts). Fulmer also demonstrated excellent form during Boston’s 2025 Grapefruit League Spring Training, posting a 0.79 ERA (1 ER/11.1 IP) across five outings. Originally drafted by the New York Mets in the first round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, the Oklahoma native boasts a career 3.94 ERA (295 ER/674.0 IP) in 262 Major League appearances (90 starts), having pitched for the Detroit Tigers (2016-22), Minnesota Twins (2022), and Chicago Cubs (2023). Fulmer, a 2017 American League All-Star and the 2016 American League Rookie of the Year, signed with Boston as a minor league free agent on February 2, 2024. After undergoing right elbow UCL revision surgery in October 2023, he missed the entirety of the 2024 season.

This roster adjustment positions the Red Sox to maintain depth in their pitching rotation while addressing Fitts’ injury recovery.
