Boston Red Sox complete four roster transactions

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

  • Selected left-handed pitcher Payton Tolle to the active Major League roster from Triple-A Worcester. He will wear number 70.
  • Released right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler.
  • Recalled infielder/outfielder Nick Sogard from Worcester.
  • Optioned outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia to Worcester.

Tolle, 22, will start and make his Major League debut tonight against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Ranked by Baseball America and MLB.com as the Red Sox’ No. 2 prospect and top pitching prospect, the left-hander has posted a 3.04 ERA (31 ER/91.2 IP) with a 0.99 WHIP and 13.06 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched (133 strikeouts) in 20 games (18 starts) over three levels during his first professional season. Selected by the Red Sox in the second round of the 2024 First-Year Player Draft, the Oklahoma native has pitched in 11 games (10 starts) for High-A Greenville, six games (five starts) for Double-A Portland, and three games (all starts) for Worcester.

Buehler, 31, has recorded a 5.45 ERA (68 ER/112.1 IP) in 23 games (22 starts) for the Red Sox this season. Originally selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first round (No. 24 overall) of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft, the Kentucky native has gone 54-29 with a 3.56 ERA (327 ER/826.0 IP) in 154 career Major League games (144 starts) with the Dodgers (2017-24) and Red Sox (2025).

Sogard, 27, has played in 17 games for Boston this season, batting .254 (15-for-59) with 10 runs scored while making 11 starts at first base, two at second base, and two at third base. The switch-hitter has also played in 90 games for Worcester, batting .271 (91-for-336) with 22 doubles, five home runs, and 61 runs scored. Originally selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 12th round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft, the California native has batted .265 (36-for-136) in 48 career Major League games, all with the Red Sox (2024-25), making 13 starts at second base, 11 at first base, eight at third base, and six at shortstop.
