Club Designates RHP Tommy Kahnle for Assignment

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today acquired infielder Brett Harris from the Athletics, in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Ben Hansen, and optioned Harris to Triple-A Worcester. To make room on the 40-man roster, Boston designated right-handed pitcher Tommy Kahnle for assignment.

Harris, 28, has hit .336 (50-for-149) with 32 runs scored, 13 doubles, one triple, five home runs, 34 RBI, 24 walks, and a .978 OPS in 37 games for Triple-A Las Vegas this season, making 18 starts at third base, 10 at first base, six at second base, and three as the designated hitter. The right-handed hitter has also played in five Major League games this year for the Athletics, making one start at third base. Originally selected by the Athletics in the seventh round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft, the Illinois native has batted .194 (35-for-180) with three home runs and 17 RBI in 73 career Major League games, all with the Athletics (2024-26).

Hansen, 24, has pitched in 13 games (two starts) for High-A Greenville this season, going 2-0 with a 4.75 ERA (22 ER/41.2 IP) and 52 strikeouts. Selected by Boston in the 20th round of the 2024 First-Year Player Draft, the California native owns a 5.63 ERA (64 ER/102.1 IP) in 31 career minor league games (17 starts), all in the Red Sox organization (2025-26).

Kahnle, 36, pitched the eighth inning in last night’s game against the Washington Nationals. The right-hander has recorded an 8.00 ERA (8 ER/9.0 IP) in eight games for Boston this season. Originally selected by the New York Yankees in the fifth round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, the New York native has posted a 3.70 ERA (183 ER/445.2 IP) in 464 career Major League games with the Colorado Rockies (2014-15), Chicago White Sox (2016-17), Yankees (2017-20, 2023-24), Los Angeles Dodgers (2022), Detroit Tigers (2025), and Red Sox (2026)
