BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox have announced the acquisition of catcher Blake Sabol from the San Francisco Giants, in exchange for international bonus pool space.

To make room on the 40-man roster, Boston has designated right-handed pitcher Chase Shugart for assignment.

Sabol, 27, appeared in 11 games for the Giants in 2024, batting .313 (10-for-32) and making seven starts as a catcher. The left-handed hitter also played in 100 minor league games with Double-A Richmond (three games) and Triple-A Sacramento (97 games), batting .245 (87-for-355) with 15 doubles and 12 home runs. Originally selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the seventh round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft, the California native has played in 121 career Major League games with the Giants (2023-24), making 53 starts as a catcher and 32 in the left field while hitting .243 (83-for-342). In 346 career minor league games, he has made 153 starts as a catcher, 83 as a designated hitter, 53 in left field, 20 at first base, 19 in right field, and seven in center field.

Shugart, 28, made his Major League debut in 2024, posting a 4.15 ERA (4 ER/8.2 IP) in six games for the Red Sox. The right-hander also pitched in 36 games (five starts) for Triple-A Worcester, going 6-2 with a 4.46 ERA (35 ER/70.2 IP) and 80 strikeouts. A Texas native, Shugart was selected by Boston in the 12th round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft.
