Boston Acquires Promising Catcher Nate Baez, Sends Tristan Gray to Twins

BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today acquired minor league catcher Nate Baez from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for infielder Tristan Gray. With the move, Boston’s 40‑man roster now stands at 39 players.

Baez, 24, posted a strong 2025 campaign, hitting .278 (94‑for‑338) with a .794 OPS across 96 games between High‑A Cedar Rapids (45 games) and Double‑A Wichita (51 games). Behind the plate for Wichita, the right‑handed hitter threw out 14 of 61 attempted base stealers (23.0%) in 29 games (28 starts). Selected by Minnesota in the 12th round of the 2022 First‑Year Player Draft, the Arizona native has appeared in 229 career minor league games, batting .263 (206‑for‑782) with a .788 OPS while making 110 starts at catcher, 80 at first base, and 34 as designated hitter.

Gray, 29, appeared in 30 games for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2025, batting .231 (18‑for‑78) with five doubles, three home runs, and nine RBI. Defensively, he made starts at second base (9), shortstop (7), third base (3), and first base (1). The left‑handed hitter also played 72 games for Triple‑A Charlotte, hitting .270 (67‑for‑248) with an .805 OPS. Originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 13th round of the 2017 First‑Year Player Draft, the Texas native has appeared in 47 Major League games with the Rays (2023, 2025), Miami Marlins (2024), and Oakland Athletics (2024).
