Athletics recall RHP Gunnar Hoglund from Las Vegas; option RHP Carlos Duran to Las Vegas

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Oakland Athletics have recalled right-handed pitcher Gunnar Hoglund from Triple-A Las Vegas, marking his Major League debut. In a corresponding move, the club has optioned right-handed pitcher Carlos Duran to Las Vegas.

Gunnar Hoglund’s Path to the Majors

Hoglund, 25, has been dominant in Triple-A, posting a 1-2 record with a 2.43 ERA and a .664 opponents’ OPS across six starts for Las Vegas. He ranks among the Pacific Coast League leaders, leading in WHIP (1.04), tying for most starts, ranking second in ERA, fourth in opponents’ batting average (.226), and top five in strikeouts (30) and innings pitched (29.2).

Originally drafted by Toronto in the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft, Hoglund underwent Tommy John surgery in college before being traded to Oakland on March 16, 2022, in the Matt Chapman deal. Over four minor league seasons, he has compiled a 12-15 record with a 3.89 ERA in 49 games (48 starts).

Carlos Duran Sent to Triple-A

Duran, 24, was selected to the Major League roster on Wednesday but did not make an appearance before being optioned. He was acquired by Oakland from the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 2 in exchange for Esteury Ruiz.

Across seven games (two starts) between Triple-A Oklahoma City and Las Vegas, Duran holds a 1-0 record with a 6.75 ERA and a .737 opponents’ OPS.

With this move, Hoglund looks to make an impact in his first taste of Major League action, while Duran returns to Triple-A in search of a rebound.
