Athletics Acquire Catcher Jhonny Pereda from Miami for Cash Considerations

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Athletics have acquired catcher Jhonny Pereda from the Miami Marlins in exchange for cash considerations, as announced today by the club. To clear space on the 40-man roster, the A’s have designated catcher Kyle McCann for assignment.

Pereda made his Major League debut with Miami last year, hitting .231 with four RBIs in 20 games across four stints with the Marlins. He spent the remainder of the season at Triple-A Jacksonville, where he batted .297 with four home runs, 14 RBIs, and an .829 OPS in 49 games. Opponents were successful in just 4-of-8 (50.0%) stolen base attempts against him while with the Marlins, and 34-of-50 (68.0%) while with the Jumbo Shrimp. The 28-year-old right-handed hitter was originally signed by the Cubs out of Venezuela in 2013 and has played in the Cubs, Red Sox, Giants, Reds, and Marlins farm systems over his 11-year professional career. Pereda is a .260 hitter with 29 home runs and 279 RBIs in 731 career minor league games.

McCann made his Major League debut with the A’s last year, serving as the backup catcher throughout the season. He hit .236 with five home runs and 15 RBIs in 54 games, making all 41 of his starts against right-handed pitchers. The 27-year-old left-handed hitter was the A’s fourth-round selection in the 2019 draft and holds a .223 batting average with 55 home runs and 194 RBIs in 355 career minor league games.
