A’s select RHP Ferguson from Las Vegas; option RHP Jiménez to Las Vegas

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s selected right-handed pitcher Tyler Ferguson from Triple-A Las Vegas and optioned right-handed pitcher Dany Jiménez to Las Vegas, the club announced today. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster, the A’s designated outfielder Lazaro Armenteros for assignment.

Ferguson was a non-roster invitee with the A’s this spring and will be making his Major League debut. He did not allow an earned run in 10 games and 8.2 innings during Spring Training and then went 1-1 with four saves and a 2.40 ERA in 14 relief appearances with Las Vegas. The 30-year-old right-hander struck out 24 in 15.0 innings while walking five. Ferguson was a sixth round selection of the Texas Rangers in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft and is 19-20 with a 4.88 ERA in 217 games, including three starts, in eight seasons in the minors with the Rangers (2015-18), Braves (2021-22), Diamondbacks (2023) and A’s (2024) He was also with the Dodgers in 2020, but did not pitch due to the pandemic, and pitched in independent leagues in 2019 and 2021.

Jiménez was on the A’s Opening Day roster and was 1-1 with a 3.68 ERA and .176 opponents batting average in 15 relief appearances. However, he walked 13 batters in 14.2 innings for a .343 on-base percentage and had a .755 opponents OPS.

Armenteros was batting .133 with a home run, two RBI and a .528 OPS in 24 games with Triple-A Las Vegas. He was signed by the A’s as a free agent at the age of 17 out of the Dominican Republic on July 2, 2016, and is a .249 hitter with 66 home runs, 259 RBI, a .782 OPS, 97 stolen bases and 782 strikeouts in 513 minor league games over seven seasons.
