The Virginia Lottery has published its sports wagering activity report for December 2024, detailing the performance of licensed operators in the state.
From 1 to 31 December 2024, Virginians placed bets totaling $734,380,460, reflecting a 16.0% increase compared to December of the previous year. During this period, thirteen mobile operators and three casinos were operational in Virginia.
Virginia bettors claimed winnings amounting to $684,826,417, resulting in an operators’ win percentage of 6.75%.
Under state law, sports betting activities are subject to a 15% tax on adjusted gross revenue (AGR), which is calculated as total wagers minus total winnings and other authorized deductions.
Of the state tax collected on sports betting AGR, 97.5% is allocated to the state’s General Fund, while 2.5% is directed to the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund, which is managed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.
For December, eleven operators reported net positive AGR, resulting in $6.6 million in tax payments to the state.
