BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox have acquired minor league right-handed pitcher Matt McShane from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for right-handed pitcher Chase Shugart.

McShane, 22, was selected by the Pirates in the 13th round of the 2024 First-Year Player Draft. Over three seasons at St. Joseph’s University (2022-24), McShane pitched in 53 games (two starts), compiling a 14-2 record with a 3.76 ERA (50 ER/119.2 IP) and 125 strikeouts. The Pennsylvania native also pitched for the Bourne Braves in the Cape Cod Baseball League during the summers of 2023 and 2024. Following the draft, McShane did not pitch for any Pirates affiliates.
Shugart, 28, was designated for assignment on Wednesday. The right-hander made his Major League debut in 2024, posting a 4.15 ERA (4 ER/8.2 IP) in six relief appearances for the Red Sox, along with 36 games (five starts) for Triple-A Worcester. A Texas native, Shugart was selected by Boston in the 12th round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft.
