The Memphis Grizzlies’ offense is on fire, setting the stage for an intriguing matchup on Friday night when they visit the New Orleans Pelicans, who have struggled defensively.
Grizzlies’ Scoring Surge
In their last five victories, the Grizzlies have averaged an impressive 140.4 points per game. This includes an NBA season-high and franchise-record 155 points in a dominant win over the Toronto Raptors on Thursday night. The Grizzlies’ offensive prowess was on full display as nine players combined for 36 assists, and the team shot 58 of 109 from the field. Wells led the team with five 3-pointers, and Memphis finished 18 of 45 from beyond the arc.
Just a week earlier, the Grizzlies set another franchise record by making 27 3-pointers in a 144-93 blowout of the Golden State Warriors, the largest margin of victory in the league this season. Despite not having their best defensive game against Toronto, the Grizzlies led 78-70 at halftime and scored 100 points through three quarters. Memphis leads the NBA with an average of 123.7 points per game.
Pelicans’ Defensive Struggles
The Pelicans, on the other hand, are in the midst of an eight-game losing streak, allowing an average of 120.9 points per game during this stretch. New Orleans never led in their most recent game, falling behind 39-22 at the end of the first quarter in a 128-111 loss to the Houston Rockets on Thursday night. This marked the Pelicans’ 17th defeat in their last 18 games.
Head coach Willie Green, who has frequently praised his players’ toughness and competitiveness despite numerous injuries, expressed disappointment after the latest loss. The Rockets scored a combined 261 points in two lopsided victories against the Pelicans over eight days, including a 133-113 win in Houston on December 19.
Key Matchup
Memphis has a golden opportunity to exploit New Orleans’ defensive vulnerabilities. The Grizzlies’ high-scoring offense, led by key players like Wells, will look to continue their hot streak against a struggling Pelicans team.
