Commissioner Eileen O’Brien emphasized that the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) has dedicated significant efforts to ensure that licensed gambling operators embody the commission’s values, particularly regarding consumer protection and responsible gaming.

Recently, the MGC introduced its official seal of approval, which licensed operators will now be required to display on their digital platforms. This initiative aligns with the commission’s mission to promote legal and responsible gambling within the state.

Seal to Mark Licensed Companies

All MGC-licensed companies must display this seal on their platforms, including the following sportsbooks:

  • Bally Bet
  • BetMGM
  • Caesars Sportsbook
  • DraftKings
  • Fanatics Betting & Gaming
  • FanDuel
  • Penn Sports Interactive

This seal will help consumers distinguish between officially licensed websites and unlicensed black market operators. The MGC reminded players that using unregulated platforms exposes them to various risks, including data breaches, financial losses, and addiction.

Furthermore, unlicensed companies may refuse to honor winning bets, leaving consumers with no recourse. Illegal operators are often associated with organized crime as well.

On the other hand, seeing the official MGC seal will assure players they are accessing a fully licensed platform compliant with the Commonwealth’s laws and regulations. This will provide peace of mind and foster trust between players and legal sports betting companies.

Commissioner O’Brien highlighted the importance of protecting Massachusetts residents who choose to gamble on sports. She noted that only the legal marketplace can offer the necessary protections for their data and personal and financial information. By looking for this seal, users can easily identify a legal sportsbook from an illegal operator.

The MGC also urged customers to remain vigilant when it comes to online gaming. The commission pointed out that even if a service appears legitimate, it may not actually have a state license and, therefore, would not comply with state protection standards.

While the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office has issued cease-and-desist orders to several major illegal operators, eliminating unlicensed gambling entirely remains challenging. Consequently, the MGC advised players to seek more information on the American Gaming Association’s website.
