Offensive Player of the Week

Cam Coleman | QB | Richmond

Coleman was 15-of-16 passing for 278 yards and 4 TD’s and added a fifth TD on the ground in Richmond’s 41-14 win at Bryant. The sophomore had a 4-yard TD run in the first quarter before throwing scoring passes of 60, 36, 15 and 16 yards in the second to give the Spiders a 41-7 advantage. His 322.2 pass efficiency rating and 93.8% completion percentage are the best in FCS this season.

Defensive Player of the Week

Shane Hartzell | LB | Villanova

Hartzell recorded a career-high 20 tackles and 2.0 TFL’s in Villanova’s 14-6 victory over UNH. The junior led a VU defense that held UNH to 254 total yards and a pair of fi eld goals. He was involved in four straight stops inside the 7-yard line as part of a VU goal line stand in the 2nd quarter. Hartzell’s 20 tackles are the 2nd-most by an FCS player this season.

Special Teams Player of the Week

Jeff Yurk | P | Elon

Yurk averaged 51.6 yards on nine punts, which included five kicks of over 50 yards and five that were downed inside the 20-yard line. The junior had punts of 57, 68, 51 and 57 yards that landed inside the 20 and added a 66-yard boot. Yurk currently leads FCS with a 48.2 punting average and has 15 kicks over 50 yards.

Rookie of the Week

Michael Matthews-Canty | LB |

Hampton Making just his second start at linebacker, Matthews-Canty tallied five tackles as part of a dominant defensive effort in Hampton’s 41-21 win over Elon. The freshman more than doubled his season total for tackles to help the Pirates hold the Phoenix to six first downs, -28 yards rushing and 168 total yards.

CONFERENCE NOTES:

CAA RACE IS TIGHT WITH FOUR WEEKS TO GO:

Just one game separates the top five teams in the CAA standings with four weeks to go, seƫting the stage for some important Week 10 matchups. Co-leaders Rhode Island and Richmond are at home and looking to extend six-game win streaks as the Rams face Monmouth and the Spiders host Towson. Villanova and Stony Brook, who are both 3-1, hit the road with the Wildcats taking on Hampton and the Seawolves visiting Bryant. Also on the slate, William & Mary goes to North Carolina A&T, UAlbany entertains UNH and Campbell makes the short trip to Elon. In non-conference action, Maine takes on SEC member Oklahoma.

DEEPEST LEAGUE IN FCS:

The CAA has become known as the most competitive league in FCS from top to bottom. Currently, the CAA is the only FCS league with its top five teams separated by just one game. When it comes to overall records, 11 of the CAA’s 16 teams (68.8%) are .500 or better, which is also tops among FCS conferences.

HOME NOT SO SWEET IN EARLY CAA ACTION:

Through 33 conference games this season, home teams have just a 17-16 record.

FIVE CAA TEAMS RANKED IN TOP 25:

Five CAA teams are ranked in the FCS Top 25 again this week. Villanova is ranked #13 in the Stats and AFCA poll, while Rhode Island is ranked #14 in both polls. Richmond moved up to #12 in the AFCA poll and #16 in the Stats poll, Stony Brook jumped to #20 in both polls, and William & Mary is ranked #24 in both polls. The CAA’s five ranked teams in the Stats poll are ÆŸ ed for the most of any conference with the MVFC. Hampton is ranked #6 in the HBCU Coaches poll, administered by BOXTOROW.

LEADING THE NATION:

Elon’s Chandler Brayboy leads FCS in kickoff return average (37.2), Monmouth’s Sone Ntoh is first in rushing TD’s (18) and scoring (13.5 ppg), Monmouth’s Derek Robertson is first in passing yards per game (322.4 ypg), Elon’s Jeff Yurk is #1 in punting (48.9 avg), UNH’s Josiah Silver tops FCS in sacks (9.5) and William & Mary’s Jalen Jones is #1 in passes defended (16).

NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS:

CAA teams are an impressive 31-14 (.689) this season against FCS non-conference opponents. Five squads (Delaware, Rhode Island, Stony Brook, Villanova and William & Mary) went undefeated vs. FCS non-conference foes.

MONMOUTH RECORDS FIRST-EVER FBS WIN:

Monmouth recorded its first win ever over an FBS opponent when it defeated FIU, 45-42 on Sept. 21. The Hawks piled up 540 yards of offense in the game and Deuce Lee forced a fumble at the 1-yard line with 32 seconds to go. It was the CAA’s first victory over an FBS foe since the 2022 season.

TEAM NOTES

UALBANY 3-5 Overall/1-3 CAAFB

• Myles Burkett threw for 208 yards and a TD at Delaware. He has passed for 200+ yards in 6 of his last 7 games and has a TD pass in all eight contests this season. • Dontae Lunan made a team-high 10 tackles and 1.5 TFL’s at UD, which was his 6th game with double-digit stops. He leads the CAA and ranks 6th in FCS with 81 tackles. • Seven McGee had 3 catches for 77 yards at UD, which was his fifth game with 70+ yards. He’s 6th in the CAA in receiving yards. • Joju Uga scored his 5th rushing TD at UD.

BRYANT 2-6 Overall/0-4 CAAFB

• Freshman Brennan Myer made his first start at QB vs. Richmond and threw a 23-yard TD pass on his opening drive. He finished with 121 yards and 2 TD’s through the air. • Landon Ruggieri had 3 catches for 51 yards vs. Richmond. He’s 2nd in FCS in receiving TD’s (9) and 6th in receiving yards (745). • Keylijah Williams ranks 13th in FCS in kickoff returns (26.5 avg). • Colin Elliott tallied a career-high 9 tackles vs. Richmond and is second on the team with 39 stops for the season.

CAMPBELL 3-5 Overall/1-3 CAAFB

• Sincere Brown had 5 catches for 150 yards vs. N.C. A&T, including TD grabs of 64 and 53 yards. He ranks 5th in FCS in receiving yards (754) and 4th in rec. TD’s (8). • Chad Mascoe leads the CAA and ranks 7th in FCS in pass efficiency (161.0). He has three games with 300+ passing yards. • Campbell’s defense allowed a season-low 92 rushing yards to A&T and gave up its fewest points to a conference foe since 2018. • George Wilson contributed three tackles, 2.0 sacks and a forced fumble vs. A&T.

DELAWARE 7-1 Overall/4-1 CAAFB

• Marcus Yarns accounted for 170 all-purpose yards and 3 TD’s (1 rush, 2 rec) vs. UAlbany. It was his second 100+ yard (124) rushing eff ort of the season. • Phil Lutz ranks 2nd in FCS in receiving TD’s (9) and 14th in receiving yards (652). He had a TD catch in the Hens’ first seven games. • Marje Mulumba set career-highs with 8 tackles and 2.5 TFL’s against UAlbany. • KT Seay made his CAA-high 4th interception vs. UAlbany. He has picked off a pass in 4 of UD’s 8 games and ranks 3rd in FCS.

ELON 2-6 Overall/1-3 CAAFB

• Chandler Brayboy leads the nation in kickoff returns (37.2 avg) and ranks 14th in FCS in all-purpose yards (123.3 ypg). He’s 6th in career receiving yards (2,130) at Elon. • Matthew Downing passed for 181 yards and a season-high 2 TD’s at Hampton. The 181 yards were his most since Sept. 14. • Elon’s defense recorded 11 tackles for loss at Hampton. Kahmari Brown had a team-high 2.5 TFL’s and has 7.5 for the season. • Jeff Yurk averaged 51.6 yds on 9 punts at HU and leads FCS (48.9 avg) for the year.

HAMPTON 5-3 Overall/2-2 CAAFB

• Beat Elon, 41-21, for its second straight CAA win last week. Hampton has scored 27 or more points in 7 of its 8 games. • Ja’Quan Snipes ran for 107 yards and a TD vs. EU, which was his 2nd 100+-yard outing, while Tymere Robinson ran for 3 TD’s. • HU ran for 277 yards vs. EU and ranks 15th in FCS in rushing (205.3 ypg). The Pirates have run for over 170 yards in six games. • Hampton had 7 sacks and held EU to 6 first downs and -28 yards rushing. HU has given up just 31 rush yards in the past 2 games.

MAINE 4-4 Overall/2-3 CAAFB

• Carter Peevy was 29-of-39 passing for 279 yards and a TD at URI. He ranks 8th in FCS in completion pct. (70%) • Montigo Moss made a career-high 9 catches for 80 yards at URI and leads UM with 42 receptions for 441 yards and 3 TD’s. • Maine held URI to 119 rushing yards, which was the 4th ÆŸ me in the past 5 games they’ve kept an opponent under 120 yards. • Xavier Holmes has had a TFL in every game this season and leads the Black Bears with 9.5 TFL’s and 5.5 sacks for the season.

MONMOUTH 4-4 Overall/2-2 CAAFB

• MU ranks in the top 5 in FCS in total offense (504.9 ypg), passing offense (324.0 ypg) and scoring offense (40.6 ppg). • Derek Robertson is 2nd in FCS in passing yards (2,579) and 3rd in passing TD’s (21). He has thrown for 300+ yds in 6 of 8 games. • Gavin Nelson set career-highs with 9 catches for 133 yards vs. Towson, including a 33-yard TD reception. • JusÆŸ n Bennin recorded a career-high 14 tackles against Towson, which is the most by any Monmouth player this season.

UNH 4-4 Overall/2-2 CAAFB

• Logan Tomlinson made 4 catches for 56 yards at Villanova. He leads UNH with 52 receptions for 561 yards and 6 TD’s and is 8th in FCS in catches and 16th in TD’s. • Josiah Silver tallied 2.0 sacks at Villanova and tops FCS with 9.5 for the year. He has 45 total tackles and 15.0 TFL’s. • Myles Thomason ran for a career-high 79 yards at Villanova and added four catches for 39 yards in his first action since Aug. 29. • Wande Owens has made at least 9 tackles in 6 of UNH’s 8 games and has 71 for the year.

NORTH CAROLINA A&T 1-7 Overall/0-4 CAAFB

• JusÆŸ n Fomby passed for 185 yards and a TD at Campbell. He has thrown for at least 185 yards and a TD in four straight games. • Ger-Cari Caldwell made a team-high 6 catches for 47 yards and a TD vs. CU. It was his 5th game with at least five receptions. • Henry Daniel had a big game at Campbell with a team-high 9 tackles, 3.0 TFL’s, 2.0 sacks and a forced fumble. • Cameren Dalrymple rushed for a team-high 75 tackles on 16 carries at CU. It was his second-highest total of the season.

RHODE ISLAND 7-1 Overall/4-0 CAAFB

• On a 6-game winning streak and off to its best start in conference play since 2001. • Malik Grant rushed for 87 yards and a TD against Maine. He has three 100+-yard outings and has 6 TD’s in the past 5 games. • URI’s defense recorded a season-high six sacks and held Maine to 57 yards rushing. The Rams are 7th in FCS with 59 TFL’s and 22nd in sacks with 21. • A.J. Pena ranks 6th in FCS in sacks (8.0) and 7th in tackles for loss (12.0). He’s 4th on URI’s career list with 22.5 sacks.

RICHMOND 6-2 Overall/4-0 CAAFB

• Extended its win streak to six after beating Bryant last week. UR is 4-0 in CAA play for the first time in a full season since 2015. • Cam Coleman was 15-of-16 passing for 278 yards and 4 TD’s at BU. His 93.8% completion pct. was the best in FCS this season. • Nick DeGennaro had 7 catches for a career-high 162 yards and a TD at BU. It was the most yards for a UR receiver since 2022. • Jeremiah Grant ranks 2nd in the CAA and is 5th in FCS with 8.5 sacks. He has had at least a half-sack in 6 of UR’s 8 games.

STONY BROOK 6-2 Overall/3-1 CAAFB

• Beat No. 15 William & Mary last week for their first ranked win since 2021. SBU’s 6-2 start is its best since 2018. • Roland Dempster ran for 144 yards and 2 TD’s vs. W&M, which was his 6th 100+ yard outing. He’s 7th in FCS in rushing (947 yds) and 2nd with 14 rushing TD’s. • Tyler Knoop passed for 240 yards and 2 TD’s vs. W&M and has thrown for 627 yards and 8 TD’s over the past two games. • A.J. Roberts made a team-high 11 tackles and added a 15-yard pick six vs. W&M.

TOWSON 4-4 Overall/2-2 CAAFB

• Saturday’s game at Richmond will be Towson’s 4th vs. a ranked opponent in 2024. • TU’s defense held Monmouth’s top-ranked scoring offense (44.4 ppg) to a season-low 14 points in last week’s road win. • Sean Brown passed for 243 yards and 2 TD’s at Monmouth. It was third 200+-yard passing eff ort and 3rd game with multiple TD’s. • Devin Matthews rushed for 75 yards at MU and went over 2,000 rushing yards (2,010) for his career. His 25 career TD’s are one shy of 6th place on TU’s all-ÆŸ me list.

VILLANOVA 6-2 Overall/3-1 CAAFB

• Made a pair of goal line stands and recorded a 14-6 win over UNH last week. • Shane Hartzell tallied a career-high 20 tackles and 2.0 TFL’s vs. UNH. He leads VU and ranks 13th in FCS with 75 stops. • Devin Smith made 3 catches for 60 yards vs. UNH, including a one-handed 31-yard TD grab. He leads VU with 306 receiving yards. • Brendan Bell contributed 9 tackles, 4.5 TFL’s, a sack and a forced fumble vs. UNH. He leads VU with 9.5 TFL’s and has made at least 9 stops in five of the eight games.

WILLIAM & MARY 5-3 Overall/2-2 CAAFB

• W&M ranks 3rd in FCS in rushing (257.4 ypg) and 12th in total offense (443.1 ypg). W&M has rushed for 200+ yards in 5 games. • Bronson Yoder ran for 65 yards at SBU and has rushed for 705 yards and 6 TD’s over the past 7 games. He’s 17th in FCS in rushing. • Jalen Jones leads FCS in PBU’s (14) and passes defended (16). He also tops the team with 2 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles. • Quinn Osborne made a season-high 12 tackles at SBU and has recorded 35 stops over the past four contests.
