Josh Winder optioned to Triple-A St. Paul
MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have recalled right-handed pitcher Louie Varland from Triple-A St. Paul.
Varland, who will be making his fourth stint with the Twins this season, recently made a start with Minnesota as the 27th man for a doubleheader August 9 vs. Cleveland, allowing three runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings pitched, with no walks and four strikeouts. In 15 starts for the Saints this season, Varland has gone 4-8 with a 4.91 ERA (73.1 IP, 40 ER) with 28 walks and 84 strikeouts, including a record of 2-2 with a 1.48 ERA (30.1 IP, 5 ER) and a .193 opponent batting average in his last six starts for St. Paul, since June 29. In seven games (6 starts) for the Twins this season, Varland has gone 0-4 with a 6.46 ERA (30.2 IP, 22 ER), 10 walks and 29 strikeouts. He is scheduled to make the start for Minnesota this afternoon against the Royals at Target Field.
To make room for Varland on the 26-man roster, the Twins have optioned right-handed pitcher Josh Winder to St. Paul. Winder appeared in three games during his most recent stint with the Twins, pitching 7.0 scoreless innings of relief with two hits allowed, one walk and eight strikeouts.
