Sousa transferred to the 60-day IL; Amaya optioned to Triple A Sugar Land

HOUSTON, TX – The Houston Astros have acquired IF Jacob Amaya from the Miami Marlins in exchange for cash considerations and minor league RHP Valente Bellozo. To make room for Amaya on the 40-man roster, the Astros transferred LHP Bennett Sousa to the 60-day IL. Additionally, Amaya has been optioned to Triple A Sugar Land. The announcement was made by Astros General Manager Dana Brown.

Amaya, 25, has appeared in three games with Triple A Jacksonville this season. He made his Major League debut with the Marlins last season, batting .222 (2×9) with two RBI in four games. He spent the majority of his 2023 campaign at Triple A Jacksonville, batting .252 (122×484) with 26 doubles, two triples, 15 home runs, 65 RBI and a .752 OPS (.345 OBP/.407 SLG) in 128 games. Amaya was originally selected in the 11th round of the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft by Los Angeles (NL).

Bellozo, 24, made 26 appearances (16 starts) between High A Asheville and Double A Corpus Christi in 2023. He recorded a 5.55 ERA (68ER/110.1IP) with a 1.33 WHIP and a .266 opponent batting average last season. For his career, he has a 14-10 record with a 3.45 ERA(103ER/269IP) in 69 appearances. Bellozo was signed by the Astros as a non-drafted free agent on July 3, 2017, from Mexicali, MX.

Sousa, 29, underwent surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome on Wednesday. As a result, he is expected to miss the remainder of the 2024 season.

Following today’s moves, the Astros 40-man roster remains full.
