The Phillies have agreed to terms on a contract for the 2024 season with right-handed pitcher Spencer Turnbull. To make room for Turnbull on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher McKinley Moore was designated for assignment.
Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.
Turnbull, 31, was limited to seven starts with the Detroit Tigers in 2023, striking out 24 batters across 31.0 innings. Prior to undergoing Tommy John surgery and missing the entire 2022 season, Turnbull threw the eighth no-hitter in Tigers franchise history on May 18, 2021, at the Seattle Mariners. He struck out nine and walked two en route to the first complete game of his career.
Originally selected by the Tigers in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft, the 6-foot-3, Demopolis, Ala., native is a veteran of 61 major league games (60 starts) with a 4.55 ERA and 280 career strikeouts, all with Detroit. Turnbull has allowed just 24 home runs across 302.1 career innings pitched. Among 93 American League pitchers with at least 300.0 innings pitched from 2018-23, Turnbull’s 0.71 HR/9.0 IP ratio ranks second.
