Lee McGregor is set to face the dangerous Mexican fighter Erik Robles on Friday night for the vacant IBO world super bantamweight title. The thrilling showdown will be broadcast live around the globe on DAZN.
The action emanates live from Edinburgh’s Meadowbank Sports Centre starting at 7pm local time. McGregor, affectionately known as ‘Lightning’, is expected to be bolstered by the support of a capacity home crowd on what he anticipates could be a “life-changing” evening.
Already an accomplished British, Commonwealth, and European bantamweight champion with only ten fights to his name, McGregor has recently teamed up with Wasserman Boxing to shape the next stage of his professional boxing career, beginning with a shot at the IBO world belt.
In addition to McGregor’s headline fight, the card for the evening is packed with thrilling matchups. UK’s most promising heavyweight prospect Matty Harris and rising super lightweight star Harlem Eubank will be gracing the ring in the Scottish capital.
The hard-hitting Kazakh boxer Sultan Zaurbek will take on former European champion John Cater, while featherweight Isaac Lowe is eager to mark his return to the ring with a significant victory. Heavyweight pugilist Kash Ali is set to make a statement, and Great Britain’s amateur standout Ben Andrews will step into the professional ring for the first time.
Scottish boxing sensation, Lee McGregor, isn’t one to back down from a good fight. In his own words, he declares, “I’ve never run from a challenge. I’m a warrior, and I don’t fear anyone or anything.”
McGregor is looking forward to the electrifying atmosphere. “If the going gets tough, the support from the crowd will keep me going. Mexican fighters like Robles always come prepared for a real scrappy fight,” he says.
Yet, McGregor’s self-confidence is unwavering, “I’m all heart when I step into that ring. It’s going to take something extraordinary to take me down on Friday. I’ve braved many storms in my life. I won’t accept anything less than a victory and that belt around my waist.”
With a chuckle, he continues, “They call me the ‘Scottish Mexican’ because of the way I fight. Given our matching styles, this is going to be a rip-roaring bout.”
His opponent, Erik Robles, seems unfazed by the daunting task of being the away fighter. “I don’t feel any pressure. We Mexicans always bring the heat to the fight, regardless of where it’s held. I’m not scared one bit.”
Robles acknowledges McGregor’s skill with a nod, “Lee is a formidable fighter with a strong punch. We’re heading towards a war in the ring, and it’s going to be one heck of a fight. But I believe Mexico will have the last laugh.”
Nisse Sauerland, from Wasserman Boxing, shares his excitement about the long-awaited match, “It’s almost hard to believe that Lee hasn’t fought in his hometown since his first match in 2017. If Lee emerges victorious on Friday, the sky’s the limit for him, with plenty of high-stakes fights waiting.”
“Having worked with Josh Taylor during the World Boxing Super Series, we know the passion for boxing in this part of the world. We wanted to give Lee a chance to fight at home again.”
McGregor’s coach, Ben Davison, has nothing but praise for his fighter’s resilience under pressure. “Lee shines under the spotlight. He’s won three titles in an incredibly short time, often delivering his best during those critical title fights.”
Speaking of McGregor’s attributes, Davison says, “Lee has so many excellent qualities, not least his tremendous heart. We hope we won’t have to prove that on Friday night. Lee is well-trained, naturally big for the weight class, and he preps himself to the fullest.”
