Massachusetts gaming regulators released July 2026 revenue figures showing another solid month for both casino gambling and sports wagering, underscoring the continued strength of the state’s regulated gaming market.

Casino Gaming Revenue Tops $95.7 Million

According to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, Plainridge Park Casino, MGM Springfield, and Encore Boston Harbor collectively generated approximately $95.78 million in Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) during July.

Taxation varies by facility type:

  • Plainridge Park Casino (Category 2 slots-only)
    • Taxed at 49% of GGR
    • Of that total: 82% supports Local Aid, 18% goes to the Race Horse Development Fund
  • MGM Springfield & Encore Boston Harbor (Category 1 resort casinos)
    • Taxed at 25% of GGR
    • Revenues are distributed across several state-designated funds under the gaming statute

Since the opening of the state’s three casino properties, Massachusetts has collected approximately $2.501 billion in combined taxes and assessments from casino operations.

Sports Wagering Revenue Reaches $65.56 Million

The state also reported about $65.56 million in taxable sports wagering revenue (TSWR) for July across all licensed operators — including seven mobile/online sportsbooks and three retail sportsbooks located at the casino properties.

Sports wagering operators fall under two categories:

  • Category 1 (retail sportsbooks at EBH, MGM, PPC)
    • Taxed at 15% of TSWR
  • Category 3 (mobile/online operators: Bally Bet, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, Fanatics Betting & Gaming, FanDuel, theScore Bet)
    • Taxed at 20% of TSWR

Tax distributions from sports wagering revenue are allocated as follows:

  • 45% — General Fund
  • 17.5% — Workforce Investment Trust Fund
  • 27.5% — Gaming Local Aid Fund
  • 1% — Youth Development and Achievement Fund
  • 9% — Public Health Trust Fund

Since sports wagering launched — retail on January 31, 2023, and online on March 10, 2023 — Massachusetts has collected approximately $490.96 million in total taxes and assessments from licensed sports wagering operators.

Carryover Provision for Negative Monthly Receipts

The state’s sports wagering law includes a safeguard for operators: If an operator’s adjusted gross sports wagering receipts for a given month fall below zero — typically due to high bettor winnings or federal excise tax obligations — the operator may carry forward the negative amount to offset future months’ tax liabilities.
