Betfred to Close 132 Betting Shops, Putting Hundreds of UK Jobs at Risk Amid Rising Costs and Tax Pressures

Betfred will shut down more than a hundred betting shops across the United Kingdom as part of a major restructuring effort, a move that could eliminate up to 600 jobs. The company confirmed plans to close 132 retail locations, roughly 10 percent of its national footprint, citing mounting financial and regulatory pressures.

Operator Cites Inflation, Tax Hikes, and Rising Costs

Chief executive Joanne Whittaker said the decision follows months of internal review and reflects the increasingly difficult economics of operating retail betting shops in the UK. She pointed to inflation, higher gambling duties, and increased National Insurance contributions as key factors behind the closures.

“These are well-run shops, staffed by dedicated colleagues, and it is incredibly hard to see any of them close,” Whittaker said. “But the current fiscal and regulatory environment has made it impossible to keep trading all our shops.” She added that the company’s immediate priority is supporting employees affected by the cuts.

Betfred said it has begun formal consultations with staff and will work to provide assistance throughout the transition.

Closures Follow Earlier Warnings From Company Leadership

The announcement does not come as a surprise. Betfred co‑founder and chair Fred Done previously warned that the tax increases outlined in the UK’s Autumn Budget could force the operator to scale back its retail presence. While the final number of closures is smaller than the worst‑case scenario Done described, the move underscores the strain facing the regulated betting sector.

Industry groups have repeatedly cautioned that rising taxes and tightening regulations could weaken licensed operators and inadvertently strengthen unregulated offshore competitors. The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) has argued that an unfavorable policy environment risks undermining the long‑term sustainability of the UK’s regulated gambling market.

Betfred’s decision marks one of the most significant retail contractions by a major UK bookmaker in recent years and highlights the broader challenges facing the sector as economic pressures continue to mount.
