WNBA Preview: Washington Mystics (0-11) vs New York Liberty (10-2)

It won’t get any easier for the Washington Mystics to nail down their first win of 2024 as they hit the road to face one of the top teams in the league in the New York Liberty on Sunday.

Washington is 0-11 while New York (10-2) has won its past six games.

The Mystics lost 85-83 Friday night at home to the Indiana Fever and nearly overcame a sizzling performance by Caitlin Clark, who made seven 3-pointers and scored 30 points to go along with eight rebounds, six assists and four steals.

But there were glimmers of hope for Washington, including the play of Stefanie Dolson, who made five 3-pointers and scored a season-high 19 points.

Dolson will be playing against her former team for the third time this season. She scored 12 in the Mystics’ season opener on May 14 but, saddled with foul trouble, managed only two in the second meeting on May 31.

Head coach Eric Thibault likes what Dolson, in her first season of her second career stint in Washington, has added to his team.

New York is coming off a huge win over the league-leading Connecticut Sun on Saturday, prevailing 82-75 to hand the Sun their first loss of the year behind 24 points from Sabrina Ionescu.

Brenna Stewart has led the way, averaging 19.3 points per game, but three others are averaging in double figures. Ionescu ranks second on the team in scoring at 17.8 points per game.
