Twins acquire Steven Okert in exchange for Nick Gordon

MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have acquired left-handed pitcher Steven Okert from the Miami Marlins in exchange for utility player Nick Gordon.

Okert, 32, appeared in 64 games (64 games) for the Marlins in 2023, going 3-2 with a 4.45 ERA (58.2 IP, 29 ER), 24 walks, 73 strikeouts, a 1.26 WHIP and .229 (50-for-218) opponent batting average, while ranking in the 89th percentile in Major League Baseball in strikeout percentage (29.6%). He ranked second on the Marlins staff in appearances last season, while also ranking eighth among all National League lefties in the same category.

The 6-foot-2, 202-pound lefty has appeared in 228 career major league games (2 starts) with the San Francisco Giants (2016-18) and Marlins (2021-23), going 12-9 with a 3.70 ERA (194.1 IP, 80 ER), 45 holds, 80 walks, 220 strikeouts, a 1.17 WHIP and a .211 (148-for-701) opponent batting average. Over his career, right-handed batters have slashed .200/.303/.392 (.694 OPS) against him, while lefties have slashed .227/.306/.373 (.679 OPS). The Riverside, California native was originally selected by the Giants in the fourth round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Oklahoma.

Gordon, 28, played in 34 games in 2023, missing most of the season with a fractured right tibia. Over parts of three major league seasons with Minnesota (2021-23), he hit .250 (174-for-696) with 42 doubles, six triples, 15 home runs, 80 RBI, 77 runs scored and 16 stolen bases in 245 games. The Avon Park, Florida native was originally selected by the Twins fifth overall in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft and has spent his entire professional career in Minnesota’s organization.

The Twins have 40 players on their 40-man roster: 22 pitchers, three catchers, eight infielders, six outfielders and one utility player.
