Arlington, TX – The Texas Rangers tonight selected shortstop Gavin Fien from Great Oak High School in Temecula, Calif., with the 12th overall pick in the first round of the 2025 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Fien (pronounced “FEEN”), 18, enjoyed a standout senior season at Great Oak, batting .358 (34-for-95) with five home runs, one triple, six doubles, 16 RBI, 24 runs scored, eight stolen bases, and more walks (11) than strikeouts (9) across 30 games. Over four varsity seasons with the Wolfpack (2022–25), the right-handed hitter compiled a slash line of .378/.451/.633/1.084 with 12 home runs, 29 doubles, and 65 RBI over 91 games.

Last summer, Fien starred for the 2024 USA Baseball 18U National Team, helping the squad to an undefeated 8-0 run and a gold medal at the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup Americas Qualifier. He started all eight games and batted .400 with 11 RBI and a 1.109 OPS during the tournament.

A University of Texas commit, Fien becomes the highest draft selection in Great Oak High School history. He follows in the footsteps of his older brother, Dylan, who was chosen by the Oakland Athletics in the seventh round of the 2024 MLB Draft. Gavin is now one of 11 players from the Great Oak program to be selected in the draft.

The selection marks the Rangers’ first high school pick in the first round since 2018, when they drafted RHP Cole Winn (Orange Lutheran HS, Calif.) 15th overall.

The 2025 MLB Draft resumes tonight with two additional Rangers selections: No. 52 overall (2nd round, approx. 8:15 p.m. CT) and No. 84 overall (3rd round, approx. 8:45 p.m. CT). Rounds 4–20 will take place tomorrow beginning at 10:30 a.m. CT. Texas holds pick No. 115 in the fourth round, No. 146 in the fifth round, and will select 10th in each round thereafter to complete the draft.
