Texas Rangers Recall INF Justin Foscue, Designate OF Derek Hill for Assignment

Foscue is the Rangers’ 2nd-best prospect, according to MLB Pipeline

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced the following roster moves prior to Saturday night’s game against the Baltimore Orioles at Globe Life Field:

  • Infielder Justin Foscue (#56) recalled from Triple-A Round Rock.
  • Outfielder Derek Hill designated for assignment.

Foscue, 25, went 1-for-2 with one RBI over a brief two-game stint for Texas earlier this season. The infielder made his Major League debut on April 5 vs. Houston and recorded his first MLB hit on April 7 – a pinch-hit RBI single off the Astros’ Josh Hader. He was on the Injured List from April 8 to June 25 with a left oblique strain suffered during his at-bat against Hader, but was activated and optioned to Triple-A on June 26.

The right-handed batter and thrower has spent the balance of the campaign in the minor leagues, batting .271/.431/.469/.900 (26-96) with 4 home runs, 7 doubles, and 18 RBI in 29 games split between Rookie-level ACL Rangers and Triple-A Round Rock. He has made starts defensively in the minors this season at second base (12), first base (12) and designated hitter (4).

A former 2020 first-round pick (14th overall) by Texas from Mississippi State University, Foscue is currently rated among the top prospects in the Rangers farm system by MLB Pipeline (2nd), Baseball America (2nd), and Fangraphs (5th), and was touted by Baseball America as being the ‘Best Hitter for Average’ in the organization entering this season. The Huntsville, Ala. native prepped at Grissom High School.

The 28-year-old Hill has batted .256/.289/.465/.754 (11-43) with 3 home runs and 5 RBI in 16 games over a pair of stints with Texas this season (May 21-June 6, June 26-July 19). He most recently appeared in last night’s loss to the Orioles, striking out as a pinch hitter in the 7th inning.

With today’s transactions, the Rangers have 39 players on the club’s Major League roster, along with seven players on the 60-day Injured List: Cody Bradford, Carson Coleman, Jacob deGrom, Josh Jung, Tyler Mahle, Austin Pruitt, Cole Winn.
