Right-hander has posted a 3.72 ERA over 54 starts for Texas since 2023
Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers announced today that they have re-signed right-handed pitcher Nathan Eovaldi to a three-year contract covering the 2025-27 seasons. To make room for Eovaldi on the Major League roster, right-handed pitcher Roansy Contreras has been designated for assignment.
Eovaldi, who will turn 35 on February 13, posted a 12-8 record with a 3.80 ERA (72 ER/170.2 IP) over 29 starts for the Rangers in 2024. He led the team in wins, innings pitched, strikeouts (166), and quality starts (16). He also ranked among the American League leaders in several categories, including opponent’s on-base percentage (9th, .282), WHIP (10th, 1.11), opponent’s batting average (10th, .229), and strikeout-to-walk ratio (10th, 3.95). Eovaldi served as Texas’ Opening Day starter last season, joining fellow Alvin, Texas native Nolan Ryan as the only Texans to earn Opening Day starting nods for the Rangers in club history (since 1972).
In his two seasons with Texas (2023-24), Eovaldi compiled a 24-13 record with a 3.72 ERA (130 ER/314.2 IP) and 298 strikeouts over 54 starts. He ranked among the club leaders in wins (1st), innings pitched (1st), quality starts (1st, 27), starts (2nd, 54), and strikeouts (2nd, 298) during that span. Additionally, he ranked among qualified A.L. pitchers in ground-ball double plays induced (T4th, 29), winning percentage (7th, .649), WHIP (16th, 1.12), and baserunners allowed per 9.0 IP (18th, 10.47).
A two-time A.L. All-Star (2021 with BOS, 2023 with TEX), Eovaldi boasts a career 3.05 ERA (27 ER/79.2 IP) in 17 postseason games/12 starts. He ranks among active pitchers in postseason wins (4th, 9), innings pitched (8th), and strikeouts (9th, 82). Texas won all six of Eovaldi’s starts during the club’s 2023 World Series title run, where he went 5-0 with a 2.95 ERA (12 ER/36.2 IP) and became the first pitcher in MLB history to win five starts in a single postseason. He pitched 6.0 shutout innings in World Series Game 5 against Arizona to clinch the Rangers’ first championship in franchise history.
A 13-year MLB veteran and two-time World Series champion, Eovaldi has amassed a career 91-81 record with a 4.07 ERA (711 ER/1572.1 IP) and 1358 strikeouts in 294 games/275 starts, playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers (2011-12), Miami Marlins (2012-14), New York Yankees (2015-16), Tampa Bay Rays (2018), Boston Red Sox (2018-22), and Texas Rangers (2023-24). He was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the 11th round of the 2008 MLB Draft from Alvin High School.
Roansy Contreras, 25, was acquired by the Rangers via waiver claim from the Los Angeles Angels on October 31. He posted a 2-4 record with 2 saves and a 4.35 ERA (33 ER/68.1 IP) over 49 games/3 starts for the Angels and Pittsburgh Pirates in 2024.
With these moves, the Rangers maintain the 40-man limit on their Major League roster.
