Scherzer’s last outing of the season was a start last Saturday at Seattle
Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers announced the following roster moves prior to Saturday night’s game against the Seattle Mariners at Globe Life Field:
- Right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer placed on 15-day Injured List with a left hamstring strain.
- Right-handed pitcher Gerson Garabtio recalled from Triple-A Round Rock.
Scherzer had been the Rangers’ scheduled starting pitcher for tonight’s game. The 40-year-old made one start for Texas after his most recent stint on the Injured List, a stay of over six weeks from July 31-September 13 with right shoulder fatigue. His final outing of the season was a start last Saturday at Seattle (ND, 4.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R-ER, 2 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR, 73 pitches/49 strikes). In place of Scherzer, RHP Dane Dunning (4-7, 5.38) is the Rangers’ scheduled starting pitcher for tonight’s game against Seattle.
This will be Scherzer’s third Injured List stint in 2024, as he was also down from Opening Day-June 23 (back surgery rehabilitation) and July 31-September 13 (right shoulder fatigue). He finishes the 2024 season with a 2-4 record and 3.95 ERA (19 ER/43.1 IP) over 9 games/starts for Texas. Over his one-and-a-half seasons with the Rangers since being acquired from New York-NL in a July 30, 2023 trade, Scherzer has compiled a 6-6 record with a 3.57 ERA (35 ER/88.1 IP) over 17 games/starts in 2023-24.
A three-time Cy Young Award-winner (2013, 2016-17) and eight-time All-Star, Scherzer sits in 11th place on MLB’s all-time strikeouts list (3,407 SO). Among pitchers with at least 1500.0 innings pitched in the Wild Card Era (since 1995), he ranks tied for 3rd in strikeouts behind Hall of Famer Randy Johnson (3,545) and Justin Verlander (3,411), 3rd in strikeouts per 9.0 innings (10.65), 4th in opponent batting average (.220), and 6th in ERA (3.16).
The St. Louis native was originally selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first round (11th overall) of the 2006 MLB draft out of the University of Missouri and has spent 17 Major League seasons with Arizona (2008-09), Detroit (2010-14), Washington (2015-2021), Los Angeles-NL (2021), New York-NL (2022-23), and Texas (2023-24). He owns a lifetime 216-112 record, 3.16 ERA (1010 ER/2878.0 IP), and 3407 strikeouts (10.65 SO/9) over 466 games/457 starts, ranking among active Major League pitchers in career strikeouts (2nd), wins (2nd), starts (2nd), and innings (2nd).
The 29-year-old Garabito (pronounced HARE-son GAR-uh-BEE-toh) is 0-2 with a 4.88 ERA (13 ER/24.0 IP) in 16 games/2 starts for the Rangers in 2024, his first Major League action. He will be in his sixth Major League stint with Texas, also May 26-June 7, July 21-24, July 29-August 18, September 15-19. Garabito has spent the balance of the season in the minor leagues, combining to go 1-4 with a 3.32 ERA (22 ER/59.2 IP) over 14 games/11 starts with Frisco (AA) and Round Rock (AAA), posting 62 strikeouts against 14 walks.
Following today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster, along with five players on the 60-day Injured List: Evan Carter, Carson Coleman, Jon Gray, Corey Seager, Cole Winn.
