Star Sydney’s License Suspension Extended Another Six Months

The NSW Independent Casino Commission (NICC) has ruled that Star Sydney’s gaming license will remain suspended for an additional six months, prolonging the casino’s inability to operate its gaming floor.

This decision, announced after the latest regulatory review, is a major setback for the property, which had hoped to resume operations this year. Instead, the NICC concluded that continued oversight is necessary while the casino works toward meeting compliance standards.

No Early Return to Gaming Operations

“Having regard to the submissions from both The Star and the Manager, the NICC has determined that The Star’s licence suspension should remain in effect,” the regulator stated.

The suspension will now extend until March 1, 2026. The NICC also confirmed it has sought ministerial approval to amend the Casino Control Regulation 2019 to extend the appointment of Mr. Weeks as Manager through March 31, 2026, unless ended earlier.

Fallout from Past Misconduct

The extension is the latest chapter in Star Sydney’s regulatory troubles. The Bell Inquiry previously uncovered evidence of money laundering and criminal activity facilitated by junket operators, exposing serious failures in the casino’s internal controls.

A follow‑up review in 2024 found that the property still had “a long way to go” in implementing reforms and meeting the regulator’s expectations. The NICC also criticized the casino’s former leadership for adopting a “combative” stance rather than embracing genuine reform.

New Leadership, New Approach

Under new management, Star Sydney has pledged full cooperation. Steve McCann, formerly of Crown Resorts, was appointed to lead the remediation effort and acknowledged the regulator’s decision.

“We acknowledge that there is more work to do, but we remain committed to delivering on our Remediation Plan to support the safe and compliant operation of our business,” McCann said. “The Star is committed to continuing its transparent and constructive relationship with the Manager, the NICC and the New South Wales Government, and demonstrating to all its stakeholders its suitability as a license holder as soon as possible.”

Outlook

With the suspension now extended into 2026, Star Sydney faces at least another half‑year under strict oversight. The next six months will be critical as the casino works to prove its compliance, rebuild trust with regulators, and prepare for a potential relaunch.
