RECAP: Revolution Fall at New York Red Bulls, 4-2 

Carles Gil becomes the fourth player in Revolution history to record 100 MLS goal contributions

HARRISON, N.J. – The New England Revolution (2-8-1; 7 pts.) fell to the New York Red Bulls (5-2-5, 20 pts.) 4-2, on the road at Red Bull Arena on Saturday night. New England captain Carles Gil netted his team-best fourth goal of the 2024 campaign, becoming the fourth player in club history to reach 100 goal contributions in MLS regular season play. Forward Giacomo Vrioni closed the scoring for New England with his second goal of the regular season in the closing minutes.

After New York opened the scoring in the sixth minute, Gil found the equalizer midway through the first half. Tomás Chancalay delivered a pinpoint cross into the penalty area where Gil nodded it home for the first headed goal of his MLS career. With his first assist in a Revolution uniform, Chancalay has now reached the scoresheet in three consecutive games. Tonight, he led New England’s attack with three shots, including two on target.

The Revolution had momentum with halftime approaching, but New York retook the lead from the penalty spot via Emil Forsberg in the 43rd minute after Henry Kessler was whistled for a handball in the box. New York extended its lead to 3-1 in the 84th minute, before Vrioni closed the gap with a left-footed tally in the 90th minute. Vrioni converted on assists from midfielders Emmanuel Boateng, who now owns 25 career helpers in MLS, and Ian Harkes. With the Revolution pressing for an equalizer, the Red Bulls closed the door with a fourth goal in stoppage time to seal the 4-2 result.

Midfielder Matt Polster played all 90 minutes in his 100th regular season start for the Revolution. On the defensive end, goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič suited up for his second consecutive start and eclipsed 5,000 MLS minutes played with his performance tonight. Defender Xavier Arreaga collected his third consecutive start tonight in central defense alongside Kessler. With Ryan Spaulding unavailable due to illness, Andrew Farrell slotted in at right back with Nick Lima shifting to the left side.

New England opens up a two-game homestand next Saturday, May 18 against the Philadelphia Union at Gillette Stadium.
