Phillies place Turner on paternity list; recall Wilson

Prior to tonight’s game against the San Diego Padres, the Phillies placed shortstop Trea Turner on the paternity list. To fill his spot on the 28-man roster, the club recalled infielder/outfielder Weston Wilson from triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski made the announcement.

Turner, 30, was named National League Player of the Week today for games played Aug. 28-Sept. 3 after slashing .423/.464/1.231 (1.695 OPS) with nine runs, one double, one triple, six home runs, 14 RBI and two stolen bases over six games and 28 plate appearances.

Yesterday, Turner extended his hitting streak to a season-high 15 games with two hits, including a home run. Since Aug. 4, he is slashing .362/.395/.767 (1.162 OPS) with 26 runs, nine doubles, one triple, 12 home runs, 33 RBI and four stolen bases in 28 games. He has hit safely in 26 of those 28 games and reached base safely in 27 of 28. On Saturday, the Boynton Beach, Fla., native tied a Phillies franchise record with a home run in five straight games.

Originally selected in the first round (13th overall) of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Padres, Turner was signed by the Phillies as a free agent on Dec. 8, 2022.

Wilson, 28, has slashed .259/.364/.531 (.895 OPS) with 80 runs, 17 doubles, three triples, 29 home runs, 77 RBI, 66 walks and 28 stolen bases in 112 games for the IronPigs this year. On Sunday, he hit two home runs against Syracuse and tied Rhys Hoskins (2017) for the most homers in a season in Lehigh Valley franchise history. The Woodland Hills, Calif., resident made his major league debut for the Phillies on Aug. 9 against the Washington Nationals and became the fifth player in franchise history and the first since Marlon Anderson on Sept. 8, 1998, to homer in his first career plate appearance.

Wilson was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 17th round of the 2016 MLB Draft and was signed by the Phillies as a minor league free agent on Jan. 3, 2023.
