Boxing Match Preview: Skye Nicolson (14-1-0, 3 KOs) vs. Yuliahn Luna Avila (28-4-1, 4 KOs)

Australian sensation Skye Nicolson, the 2020 Olympic bronze medalist and former WBC featherweight champion, collides with battle-tested Mexican veteran Yuliahn Luna Avila in a pivotal super bantamweight showdown for the vacant WBC interim junior featherweight title. This 10-round co-main event on the Diego Pacheco-Kevin Lele Sadjo card promises technical mastery meets gritty resilience: Nicolson’s precise jab-and-move artistry against Luna’s forward pressure and championship experience. At 30, Nicolson (now 14-1 after a title loss earlier this year) aims to reclaim gold and position for an undisputed clash with Ellie Scotney; the 31-year-old Luna (28-4-1, on a three-fight win streak) seeks a second world strap after dropping from bantamweight. With Nicolson’s Stockton undercard drawing DAZN eyes, expect a chess match favoring decisions (Nicolson 4/5 recent to points; Luna 7/8), where mid-fight adjustments and body work in rounds 6-10 could crown the next 122-pound force.

Fight Information

Time: Ring walks approx. 9:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. PT (main card starts 8:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. PT)

Venue: Adventist Health Arena, Stockton, California (capacity: 11,200; intimate, high-energy spot for women’s boxing, with Nicolson’s promoter ties amplifying the atmosphere)

Broadcast: DAZN (global streaming); prelims on YouTube

Bout Context: 10 rounds at super bantamweight (122 lbs) for the vacant WBC women’s interim junior featherweight title; co-main to Pacheco-Sadjo (super middleweight, 12 rounds). Promoted by Matchroom Boxing (Eddie Hearn) and 360 Promotions.

Injury Report

Both fighters report fully fit post-weigh-ins (Nicolson 121.5 lbs, Luna 122 lbs), with no setbacks in camp. Nicolson’s March 2025 title loss to Tiara Brown was competitive but injury-free; her quick turnaround to July/August wins confirms durability. Luna’s extended camp (postponed October bout) carried over without issues, and her last loss (2023 to Dina Thorslund) was a unanimous decision, not structural damage. Medical clearances from the California State Athletic Commission highlight zero concerns—Luna’s history of cuts (e.g., 2022 hand fracture) is healed.

FighterKey NotesStatus
Skye NicolsonFull camp; no injuries since March 2025 SD loss. Past: Minor swelling in 2024 title defense.Cleared
Yuliahn Luna AvilaCamp extended from October cancellation; cleared seven-day pre-weigh-in. Past: Hand fracture (2022), fully recovered.Cleared

Key Fighter Matchups

Orthodox vs. orthodox in a stylistic contrast: Nicolson’s 5’7″ frame and 67″ reach emphasize distance management (lands 48% jabs), while Luna’s 5’6″ stockier build (65″ reach) favors inside angles. Projected: Nicolson boxes early, Luna closes mid-fight.

Nicolson’s Precision vs. Luna’s Pressure: Nicolson (14-1, 21% KO) deploys a stiff jab (45% connect rate) and counter hooks, as in her August 2025 KO of Urvashi Singh (Rd 2 body shot). Luna (28-4-1, 14% KO) presses with combinations (avg. 55 punches/round), per her March 2025 UD over Dafne Paulina Torres Lopez (outlanded 210-185). Edge: Nicolson’s footwork (evades 62% power shots) frustrates, but Luna’s volume could wear down in trenches.

Power vs. Chin: Luna’s 4 KOs include a 2024 stoppage of Elizabeth Chavez Espinoza (Rd 6); she targets liver shots. Nicolson’s 3 KOs are opportunistic, with a granite chin (undefeated inside distance post-2021). Edge: Luna’s aggression risks overextension; Nicolson’s defense (absorbs 28%) holds.

Stamina & Tactics: Both excel late (Nicolson won Rds 8-10 vs. Brown; Luna 6/7 recent to decision). Luna faded in 2023 Thorslund loss (Rds 9-10); Nicolson thrives on counters. Edge: Nicolson for 10-round pacing.

Fighter Records and Standings

Skye Nicolson: 14-1-0 (3 KOs), ranked #1 WBC super bantamweight, #2 WBO. Pro since 2021; 15 fights, 102 rounds. Strengths: Technical IQ (Olympic pedigree), jab control. Weaknesses: Occasional slow starts (trailed early vs. Brown).

Yuliahn Luna Avila: 28-4-1 (4 KOs), ranked #5 WBC super bantamweight, former WBC bantamweight champ. Pro since 2011; 33 fights, 221 rounds. Strengths: Experience (2x titlist), forward momentum. Weaknesses: Vulnerable to range (lost 2023 UD to Thorslund).

Nicolson’s youth (30 vs. 31) meets Luna’s volume (10 more fights).

Recent Form

Nicolson rebounds from her lone pro loss with two stoppages, showcasing power growth at 122 lbs. Luna’s streak includes a postponed October bout, extending her prep for this mandatory.

Boxing Match Preview: Gabriel Flores Jr (27-2-0, 8 KOs) vs. Joe Cordina (18-1-0, 9 KOs)

0

Stockton native Gabriel Flores Jr returns to his hometown roots for a high-stakes lightweight showdown against former IBF super featherweight champion Joe Cordina, serving as co-main event to Diego Pacheco’s super middleweight clash with Kevin Lele Sadjo. This 12-round bout for the vacant WBO International lightweight title pits Flores’ relentless volume punching and home-crowd fire against Cordina’s slick technical boxing and championship pedigree. At 25, Flores seeks a statement win to propel him toward world title contention after rebuilding from early-career setbacks; the 34-year-old Cordina, dropping to 135 pounds for the second time, eyes a two-division strap in what could be the final chapter of his decorated career. Expect a tactical chess match early, with Flores pressing forward and Cordina countering—third-round adjustments and stamina in the championship rounds likely deciding a fight heavy on decisions (Flores 6 straight UD/MD wins; Cordina 3 of last 4 to points).Fight Information

Time: Ring walks approx. 10:00 p.m. ET / 7:00 p.m. PT (main card starts 8:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. PT)

Venue:

Adventist Health Arena, Stockton, California (capacity: 11,200; home to local boxing events, electric atmosphere for Flores’ return)

Broadcast: DAZN (global streaming); prelims on YouTube

Bout Context: 12 rounds at lightweight (135 lbs) for the vacant WBO International title; co-main to Pacheco-Sadjo (super middleweight, 12 rounds). Promoted by G-Squad Entertainment and Matchroom Boxing (Eddie Hearn).

Injury Report

Both fighters enter healthy, with no reported setbacks in the lead-up to weigh-ins (Flores 134.8 lbs, Cordina 135 lbs). Cordina’s history includes a fractured hand in 2022 that cost him his first IBF title reign without a defense, but he’s been cleared since his July 2025 lightweight debut.

Flores has avoided major injuries during his six-fight win streak, though he absorbed punishment in prior losses to Giovanni Cabrera (UD 10, 2022) and Luis Alberto Lopez (UD 10, 2021). Pre-fight medicals confirm both are 100%, with Cordina emphasizing recovery from his May 2024 TKO loss to Anthony Cacace as a non-issue.

FighterKey NotesStatus
Gabriel Flores JrNo current injuries; full camp in Stockton. Past: Minor cuts in 2022 loss to Cabrera.Cleared
Joe CordinaHand fully healed from 2022; no issues post-July 2025 win. Past: TKO loss to Cacace (May 2024) due to cuts, not structural damage.Cleared

Key Fighter Matchups

This orthodox-on-orthodox clash features similar frames (both 5’9″, Flores 69.5″ reach vs. Cordina 69″), but divergent styles: Flores’ high-volume aggression (avg. 65 punches/round) vs. Cordina’s precise counters (58% accuracy). Projected pace: Flores advances early, Cordina boxes off the back foot mid-fight.

Flores’ Volume vs. Cordina’s Timing: Flores (27-2, 30% KO) thrives on pressure, landing 42% of power shots in recent decisions; his 2025 UD win over Jose Arellano (98-92 x3) showcased relentless body work. Cordina (18-1, 50% KO), a former Olympian, excels at range with jabs (lands 45%), as in his SD title win over Shavkat Rakhimov (115-113, 114-114, 116-112). Edge: Cordina’s footwork frustrates early rushes, but Flores’ Stockton support could force errors. Tale of the Tape favors Cordina in experience (former world champ) and defense (absorbs 32% landed on); Flores leads in youth and output.

Power vs. Durability: Cordina’s 9 KOs include a 2nd-round stoppage of Kenichi Ogawa (2022 IBF title); he targets body-head combos. Flores’ 8 KOs are early (avg. Rd 3), but his chin held vs. Cabrera’s power. Edge: Even—Cordina’s 1 KO loss (to Cacace) was cuts; Flores undefeated inside distance since 2019.

Stamina & Late Rounds: Both go the distance often (Flores 6/6 recent; Cordina 3/4). Cordina faded in Rd 8 vs. Cacace; Flores strong in trenches (won Rds 9-10 vs. Arellano). Edge: Flores’ conditioning from 185 pro rounds.

Fighter Records and Standings

Gabriel Flores Jr: 27-2-0 (8 KOs), ranked #4 WBO lightweight, #10 WBC. Pro since 2017; 29 fights, 185 rounds. Strengths: Volume (65+ punches/round), home advantage. Weaknesses: Vulnerable to counters (2 UD losses in 2021-22).

Joe Cordina: 18-1-0 (9 KOs), ranked #6 WBO lightweight (former #1 IBF super feather). Pro since 2017; 19 fights, 123 rounds. Strengths: Technical precision (58% accuracy), championship IQ. Weaknesses: Age (34), recent KO loss exposes cut risk.

Flores’ experience edge (10 more fights) meets Cordina’s elite resume (2x world title challenger).

Recent Form

Flores enters on a six-fight win streak since 2022 setbacks, all decisions showcasing maturity. Cordina’s lone loss snapped a 17-fight unbeaten run; his July 2025 lightweight debut was a gritty UD tune-up.

Fight History

First professional meeting—no amateur overlap or prior sparring reported. Their paths crossed indirectly: Both faced Lopez (Flores L UD 2021; Cordina no matchup). Cordina’s elite wins (Rakhimov, Ogawa) outshine Flores’ regional triumphs, but Flores’ volume could mirror Cacace’s pressure that broke Cordina. All-time lightweight H2H N/A; expect a 60% decision probability based on styles.

NHL Game Preview: Carolina Hurricanes (19-9-2) vs. Philadelphia Flyers (16-9-4)

0

The Carolina Hurricanes, winners of two straight and riding an eight-game point streak in regulation, head to Philadelphia for the front end of a back-to-back set against the Flyers at the newly rebranded Xfinity Mobile Arena. This Metropolitan Division rivalry renews with Carolina’s suffocating forecheck (league-leading 3.45 CA/60) clashing against Philadelphia’s opportunistic rush (top-10 in breakaway goals). The Hurricanes’ power play (25.8%, 5th) could feast on the Flyers’ middling penalty kill (79.2%, 20th), but Philly’s home grit—bolstered by recent trade acquisitions—promises a playoff-style grind. With key blue-liners sidelined on both benches, expect a low-event battle where goaltending and faceoff wins (CAR 52.1%) prove decisive in a potential trap game before Sunday’s rematch in Raleigh.

Game Information

Injury Report

Carolina’s top-pair absences strain their shutdown depth, while Philadelphia’s D-core is patchwork without Ristolainen. Both teams lean on recalls and tweaks.

Key Player Matchups

Projected lines from morning skates (Hurricanes via Ruff; Flyers via Briere tweaks). Carolina’s cycle meets Philly’s counterattack—watch Aho vs. Couturier in the dots.

Hurricanes Top Line (Svechnikov – Aho – Jarvis) vs. Flyers Top Line (Zegras – Dvorak – Konecny): Andrei Svechnikov (14G, 28P) and Sebastian Aho (9G, 25P) drive Carolina’s even-strength dominance (55.2% xGF%); Seth Jarvis (17G) adds finish. They face Trevor Zegras (trade spark: 8P in 10GP) and Travis Konecny (12G, edge creator). Edge: Hurricanes’ depth, but Zegras’ creativity tests.

Hurricanes Second Line (Ehlers – Stankoven – Blake) vs. Flyers Second Line (Michkov – Couturier – Tippett): Nikolaj Ehlers (recent acquisition: 4G in 5GP) pairs with Logan Stankoven’s clutch tying goal vs. WSH; Jack Blake provides grit. Philadelphia’s Matvei Michkov (rookie phenom: 15P) centers Sean Couturier (faceoff anchor, 54.3%) and Owen Tippett (sniper). Edge: Flyers’ top-six pop exploits CAR’s road fatigue.

Goalie Duel: Brandon Bussi (Hurricanes) vs. Dan Vladar (Flyers): Bussi (8-2-0, 1.98 GAA, .932 SV%; 8th straight win vs. WSH) continues hot streak; 2.10 GAA vs. East. Vladar (7-4-2, 2.45 GAA, .915 SV%; 28 saves vs. SJS) rebounds from OT loss; strong at home (3-1-1). Edge: Bussi’s form, but back-to-back tests depth.

Special teams: Hurricanes PP (25.8%) vs. Flyers PK (79.2%); Philly PP (20.1%) middling against CAR’s 83.5% kill (4th).

NHL Game Preview: Montreal Canadiens (16-11-3) vs. New York Rangers (15-13-4)

0

The Montreal Canadiens welcome the New York Rangers to the Bell Centre for a Saturday night Original Six showdown that could ignite the Atlantic and Metropolitan playoff races. Montreal, leaning on a resurgent young core and stingy home defense, hosts a Rangers team reeling from a four-game skid and key absences on the blue line. With the Habs’ power play clicking at 24.5% (8th in NHL) against New York’s porous penalty kill (76.8%, 27th), this tilt shapes up as a special-teams chess match. Expect emotion-fueled intensity from Cole Caufield’s sniping vs. Artemi Panarin’s playmaking, where third-period discipline and goaltending poise separate contenders from pretenders in a December pivot point.

Injury Report

Montreal’s forward depth is tested, but their blue line holds firm. New York’s defensive woes deepen with multiple pairings sidelined, forcing coach Peter Laviolette into emergency recalls.

Key Player Matchups

Projected lines from line rushes highlight Montreal’s cycle vs. New York’s rush game. Caufield-Suzuki duo vs. Panarin-Trocheck sets the tone.

Canadiens Top Line (Caufield – Suzuki – Newhook) vs. Rangers Top Line (Panarin – Trocheck – Lafreniere): Cole Caufield (18G, 32P in 30GP) rides a 7-game point streak (5G), thriving on Nick Suzuki’s setup (12A). They matchup against Artemi Panarin (15G, 38P, NHL assist lead with 23), who’s 4-0-4 in last 4 vs. MTL. Edge: Rangers’ creation, but Habs’ home PP exploits.

Canadiens Second Line (Roy – Dvorak – Anderson) vs. Rangers Second Line (Kakko – Chytil – Wheeler): Juraj Slafkovsky (10G) shifts up with Christian Dvorak; Josh Anderson adds physicality. New York counters with Kaapo Kakko’s emergence (8G) and Blake Wheeler’s vet poise. Edge: Even—Kakko’s two-way play neutralizes Anderson’s speed.

Goalie Duel: Samuel Montembeault (Canadiens) vs. Jonathan Quick (Rangers): Montembeault (10-6-2, 2.68 GAA, .912 SV%) anchors with 3 straight home wins (1.33 GAA); owns NYR (2-1-0, .930 SV%). Quick (5-4-3, 2.92 GAA, .905 SV%) starts if Shesterkin sits; 2.10 GAA vs. MTL lifetime. Edge: Montembeault in raucous Bell Centre.

Special teams: Habs PP (24.5%) vs. Rangers PK (76.8%); NYR PP (22.1%) faces MTL’s 82.4% kill (10th).

Team Records and Standings

Montreal Canadiens: 16-11-3 (35 points, 6th in Atlantic Division; 9-4-2 at home). Advanced stats: 13th in GF/G (3.10), 15th in GA/G (2.97), +0.13 diff (13th).

Montreal’s home OT wins (3-0) contrast Rangers’ road regression (2-5-2 last 9 away).

Recent Team Forms

Montreal rides a three-game win streak after a 4-2 home victory over Detroit on Dec. 11 (Suzuki 2A, Montembeault 30 saves; outshot DET 32-28). The Edmonton Oilers, fresh off a hat-trick heroics from Zach Hyman in a road rout of Detroit, open a grueling five-game Eastern swing against the Toronto Maple Leafs in a Saturday night showcase at Scotiabank Arena. This star-studded inter-division clash—featuring Connor McDavid’s Oilers chasing a playoff push against Auston Matthews’ high-octane Leafs—carries extra sizzle with Edmonton’s recent crease overhaul via trades with Pittsburgh and Nashville. Toronto’s blue line is battered, but their home resilience and power-play bite (14.5%, league average) could counter Edmonton’s elite man-advantage (32.1%, 1st). Injuries loom large on both sides, setting up a potential goal-fest where transition speed and goaltending volatility decide a pivotal December duel.

Game Information

Puckdrop: 7:00 p.m. ET (puck drop)

Venue: Scotiabank Arena, Toronto, Ontario (capacity: 18,800; home of the Maple Leafs since 1999)

Series Context: Third meeting of the 2025-26 season (Leafs lead 1-1 after 5-1 TOR win on Nov. 17 and 4-3 EDM OT win on Feb. 2); teams split last year’s series 2-2.

Injury Report

Edmonton’s depth takes hits amid the trade frenzy, with LTIR stints thinning the back end. Toronto’s defense is in crisis mode, forcing recalls and lineup scrambles—Ekman-Larsson’s status is the game-time wildcard.

Edmonton’s new goalie Tristan Jarry debuts post-trade, easing Stuart Skinner’s workload (3.39 GAA). Toronto recalls Henry Thrun; Hildeby’s .933 SV% shines, but D-corps leaks (3.17 GA/G).

Key Player Matchups

Projected lines from morning skates reflect Oilers’ trade tweaks (new additions integrated) and Leafs’ injury shuffles (Ekman-Larsson GTD; Thrun in if needed). McDavid vs. Rielly headlines a battle of elite rush vs. puck-movement.

Oilers Top Line (Nugent-Hopkins – McDavid – Hyman) vs. Leafs Top Line (Knies – Tavares – Nylander): Connor McDavid (16G, 48P in 31GP) erupts with 4A in the DET win, pacing NHL with 32A; Hyman’s hat trick (6th career) adds net-front menace. They face William Nylander (11G, 34P), Toronto’s assist king (23A), and John Tavares (13G, 30P). Edge: Oilers’ speed overwhelms Tavares’ faceoff wins (52.1%).

Oilers Second Line (Podkolzin – Draisaitl – Savoie) vs. Leafs Second Line (McMann – Domi – Robertson): Leon Draisaitl (17G, 40P) thrives post-trade, with 5P in last 3; Alex Savoie adds rookie pop. Toronto’s Max Domi (checking energy) and Nick Robertson (sniper) counter, but line lacks punch sans Barzal-like creator. Edge: Oilers’ scoring depth.

Goalie Duel: Tristan Jarry (Oilers) vs. Dennis Hildeby (Leafs): Jarry (acquired Friday; 2.66 GAA pre-trade) stabilizes vs. TOR’s shot barrage (30.2/game); debut nerves in hostile rink. Hildeby (2-2-3, 2.25 GAA, .933 SV%) owns 2 straight quality starts. Edge: Hildeby at home, but Oilers’ PP tests (.821 PK for TOR).

Special teams: Oilers PP (32.1%, 1st) feasts on Leafs PK (82.1%, 15th); TOR PP (14.5%) middling vs. EDM’s 80.2% kill.

Team Records and Standings

Edmonton Oilers: 14-11-6 (34 points, 4th in Pacific Division; 6-8-3 on road). Advanced stats: 4th in GF/G (3.32), 25th in GA/G (3.39), -0.07 diff (18th).

Toronto Maple Leafs: 14-11-5 (33 points, 5th in Atlantic Division; 9-4-5 at home). Advanced stats: 6th in GF/G (3.30), 18th in GA/G (3.17), +0.13 diff (14th).

Edmonton’s road OT woes (1-4) clash with Toronto’s home dominance (7-2-1 last 10).

Recent Team Forms

Edmonton builds momentum after a 4-1 road win over Detroit on Dec. 11 (Hyman 3G, McDavid 4A; outshot DET 29-28, 1/2 PP). Prior: 4-3 OT L at BUF (Dec. 9; Skinner .851 SV%), 6-2 W vs. WPG (Dec. 6), 9-4 W vs. SEA (Dec. 4), 1-0 L vs. MIN (Dec. 2). Last 10: 6-3-1 (3.5 GF/G, 3.1 GA/G), with 3 straight road points—trades inject fresh legs.

Toronto’s form dips after a 3-2 OT home loss to San Jose on Dec. 11 (Wennberg GWG; outshot 32-28, dominant 2nd but gassed in OT). Before: 2-0 W vs. TBL (Dec. 8; shutout), 2-1 SO L vs. MTL (Dec. 6), 5-1 W vs. CAR (Dec. 4), 4-1 W vs. FLA (Dec. 2). Last 10: 7-2-1 (3.2 GF/G, 2.8 GA/G), but 0-2 in OT/SO last 3—D injuries expose late fades.

NHL Game Preview: Tampa Bay Lightning (18-11-2) vs. New York Islanders (18-11-3)

0

The Tampa Bay Lightning, surging with a five-game win streak, invade UBS Arena to face a New York Islanders squad clinging to wildcard hopes amid a frustrating home stretch. This Metropolitan Division clash—featuring two of the East’s most battle-tested cores—promises playoff-like intensity, with Tampa’s lethal power play (27.1%, 4th in NHL) testing the Isles’ stingy penalty kill (82.3%, 8th). Injuries have forced both teams into lineup tinkering, but expect Nikita Kucherov and Bo Horvat to anchor a high-stakes duel where transition play and third-period execution could swing the result. Tampa eyes a season sweep; New York needs points to stay afloat.

Game Information

Puckdrop: 7:00 p.m. ET (puck drop)

Venue: UBS Arena, Elmont, New York (capacity: 17,250; home of the Islanders since 2021)

Series Context: Third meeting of the 2025-26 season (Tampa leads 2-0: 5-2 W on Oct. 19, 4-3 OT W on Nov. 25); teams split last year’s series 2-2.

Injury Report

Both rosters are nicked up, with New York’s forward depth and Tampa’s blue line feeling the strain. The Isles’ absences amplify reliance on their top-six, while Lightning coach Jon Cooper shuffles pairings.

Tampa’s crease is vulnerable without Vasilevskiy (.925 SV% leader), leaning on Johansson (3.45 GAA). New York’s middle-six scoring dips sans Barzal, forcing Kyle Palmieri into top-line minutes.

Key Player Matchups

Projected lines from morning skates emphasize Tampa’s rush vs. New York’s cycle game. Kucherov-Hedman duo vs. Horvat-Dobson anchors the spotlight.

Lightning Top Line (Kucherov – Point – Stamkos) vs. Islanders Top Line (Horvat – Nelson – Palmieri): Nikita Kucherov (23G, 52P in 31GP) is a Hart contender, with 12P in last 8 road games; Brayden Point (18G) adds two-way zip. They challenge Bo Horvat (14G, 28P), who’s elevated sans Barzal, and Brock Nelson (clutch OT hero). Edge: Lightning’s firepower, but Horvat’s faceoff edge (53.8%) wins draws.

Lightning Second Line (Guentzel – Cirelli – Killorn) vs. Islanders Second Line (Lee – Pageau – Lee): Adjusted for Cirelli’s absence—Jake Guentzel (17G post-trade) slots up with Alex Killorn. New York counters with Anders Lee (15G, power forward) and Jean-Gabriel Pageau’s checking. Edge: Isles’ physicality in board battles.

Goalie Duel: Jonas Johansson (Lightning) vs. Ilya Sorokin (Islanders): Johansson (5-2-1, 2.85 GAA, .910 SV%) steps up with 2 straight wins; faces Isles’ shot suppression (26.2/game). Sorokin (10-8-2, 2.62 GAA, .918 SV%) owns Tampa (3-1-0 lifetime, 1.75 GAA). Edge: Sorokin at home, low-event tilt potential.

Special teams: Lightning PP (27.1%) vs. Isles PK (82.3%); Isles PP (19.2%) middling against Tampa’s 84.1% PK (5th).

Team Records and Standings

Tampa Bay Lightning: 18-11-2 (38 points, 3rd in Atlantic Division; 9-6-1 on road). Advanced stats: 5th in GF/G (3.42), 12th in GA/G (2.94), +0.48 diff (8th).

New York Islanders: 18-11-3 (39 points, 4th in Metropolitan Division; 10-4-2 at home). Advanced stats: 15th in GF/G (3.05), 10th in GA/G (2.88), +0.17 diff (12th).

Tampa’s road OT prowess (4-1) meets Isles’ home shutout defense (4 in last 10).

Recent Team Forms

Tampa extends its streak with a 4-1 road win over Boston on Dec. 11 (Kucherov 2G, Johansson 28 saves), dominating 5v5 (18-8 shots). Prior: 3-2 W at DET (Dec. 9; Point GWG), 5-3 W vs. MTL (Dec. 7), 4-2 W at FLA (Dec. 5). Last 10: 8-2-0 (3.6 GF/G, 2.4 GA/G), winners of 5 straight—best run since 2022 Cup.

New York stumbles after a 2-1 home OT loss to Carolina on Dec. 11 (Sorokin 32 saves; outshot 33-24). Before: 3-2 W vs. WSH (Dec. 9; Horvat 2G), 4-3 SO L vs. PIT (Dec. 7), 1-0 W vs. BUF (Dec. 5). Last 10: 6-3-1 (2.9 GF/G, 2.5 GA/G), but 2-3-0 in last 5 with OT losses in 2.

NHL Game Preview: San Jose Sharks (15-14-3) vs. Pittsburgh Penguins (14-8-7)

0

The San Jose Sharks, buoyed by a dramatic overtime road win in Toronto, cross the continent for a Saturday afternoon showdown with the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena. This matchup contrasts San Jose’s youthful, high-octane attack—led by rookie sensation Macklin Celebrini—with Pittsburgh’s veteran core desperate to halt a three-game skid amid key injuries. The Penguins’ elite power play (32.4%, 2nd in NHL) could exploit the Sharks’ middling penalty kill (80.4%, 15th), but San Jose’s speed on the rush tests a Penguins blue line missing its shutdown pivot. With recent trades shaking up Pittsburgh’s crease and depth, expect a fast-paced, special-teams-heavy battle where goaltending stability will be paramount.

Game Information

Puckdrop: 3:00 p.m. ET (puck drop)

Venue: PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (capacity: 18,387; home of the Penguins since 2010)

Series Context: Second meeting of the 2025-26 season (after Pittsburgh’s 3-0 shutout on Oct. 18); Penguins have owned recent H2H tilts.

Injury Report

Injuries are biting both squads, with Pittsburgh’s forward and defensive depth hit hardest post-Malkin placement on IR. San Jose’s game-time calls could shuffle lines significantly.

San Jose’s top-six forward group remains intact, but Dellandrea’s status impacts secondary scoring. Pittsburgh activates Rickard Rakell (hand) from IR but loses Malkin’s playmaking—exacerbating a 1-4-1 slump in last six.

Key Player Matchups

Projected lines account for injuries and recent tweaks (Sharks via morning skate; Penguins post-trade). Emphasis on Celebrini’s dynamism vs. Crosby’s experience in a clash of eras.

Sharks Top Line (Graf – Celebrini – Smith) vs. Penguins Top Line (Rakell – Crosby – Rust): Macklin Celebrini (15G, 44P in 32GP) is a Calder frontrunner, with 7P in last 5 road games; Will Smith (rookie chemistry) adds sniper touch. They test Sidney Crosby (18G, 32P), returning Rakell (3G, 5A pre-injury) on the wing—Pittsburgh’s top trio boasts 31.2% PP efficiency. Edge: Penguins’ vets in faceoffs (Crosby 54.2%).

Sharks Second Line (Eklund – Wennberg – Toffoli) vs. Penguins Second Line (Mantha – Hayes – Brazeau): William Eklund (multi-point threat) and Tyler Toffoli (clutch finisher) drive San Jose’s rush; Alexander Wennberg stabilizes center. Pittsburgh counters with Anthony Mantha’s size and Justin Brazeau’s recent surge (4P in 3GP). Edge: Sharks’ speed exploits Hayes’ mobility limits.

Goalie Duel: Alex Nedeljkovic (Sharks) vs. Arturs Silovs (Penguins): Nedeljkovic (8-7-2, 2.94 GAA, .902 SV%) starts amid Askarov’s illness; 3 straight quality outings (under 3 GA). Silovs (4-4-5, 2.98 GAA, .900 SV%) gets the nod post-trade chaos (Skinner acquired Dec. 12). Edge: Slight to Nedeljkovic on rest, but Penguins’ shot volume (28.0/game) pressures.

Power play tilts to Pittsburgh (32.4%, 2nd) over San Jose (18.8%, 19th); Penguins’ PK (85.2%, 3rd) neutralizes Sharks’ man-advantage

Team Records and Standings

San Jose Sharks: 15-14-3 (33 points, 5th in Pacific Division; 6-9-0 on road). Advanced stats: 20th in GF/G (2.78), 22nd in GA/G (3.25), -15 diff (24th).

Pittsburgh Penguins: 14-8-7 (35 points, 5th in Metropolitan Division; 6-5-3 at home). Advanced stats: 9th in GF/G (3.10), 8th in GA/G (2.76).

San Jose’s resilience in OT (3-0 this season) meets Pittsburgh’s home PP dominance (40% in last 5).

Recent Team Forms

San Jose enters on a high after a 3-2 OT road win over Toronto on Dec. 11 (Celebrini GWG), snapping a two-game skid but outshot 35-28. Prior: 1-4 L at PHI (Dec. 9; Nedeljkovic pulled), 4-1 W at CAR (Dec. 7; Toffoli 2G), 1-4 L at DAL (Dec. 5). Last 10: 5-5-0 (2.8 GF/G, 3.2 GA/G), with 4 road wins tying for 10th-best away mark.

NBA Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs (17-7) vs. Oklahoma City Thunder (24-1)

0

The San Antonio Spurs (17-7) challenge the juggernaut Oklahoma City Thunder (24-1) in the Emirates NBA Cup West Semifinal, where a trip to the championship game—and $500,000 per player—hangs in the balance. This neutral-site showdown pits the Spurs’ resurgent youth against OKC’s historic dominance, with the Thunder eyeing a 17th straight win. The battle tips off at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, the glitzy 17,500-seat venue hosting its second straight Cup semifinal.

Tipoff: 9:00 p.m. ET (6:00 p.m. PT), streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. Vegas vibes could amplify the stakes, as San Antonio seeks an upset in a tournament where they’ve gone 4-0, while OKC boasts a flawless 5-0 Cup record.

Team Records and Standings

San Antonio Spurs: 17-7 (34 points), fifth in the Western Conference. The Spurs hold a +99 goal differential (2,751 points for, 2,652 against), ranking 16th in scoring (119.6 PPG) and 18th in defense (115.3 PPG allowed). They shine in field goal efficiency (48.6%, 9th) and free-throw shooting (79.6%, 13th), but rank 16th on threes (36.6%). ATS: 15-9 overall.

Oklahoma City Thunder: 24-1 (49 points), first in the West and matching the NBA’s best 25-game start ever. Their +386 differential (2,952 PF, 2,566 PA) underscores elite play: 2nd in scoring (123.0 PPG), 4th in defense (106.9 PPG allowed). FG% leads at 49.7%, with 37.4% from deep (5th) and 83.0% FT (3rd). ATS: 18-7.

OKC’s balance overwhelms, but San Antonio’s recent surge (9-3 without Wembanyama) tests the Thunder’s depth in a high-pressure spot.

Recent Team Forms

The Spurs are firing on all cylinders, riding a four-game win streak into Vegas after a 132-119 quarterfinal rout of the Lakers on December 10, where Stephon Castle dropped 30 points and 10 rebounds. Over their last 10 (8-2), San Antonio averages 121.4 PPG while allowing 112.8, with a +8.6 margin fueled by balanced scoring (five players in double figures vs. LAL). Before that: a 135-132 thriller at New Orleans on December 8 and a 114-112 squeaker at Orlando on December 3. Their lone recent stumble? A 130-117 loss at Cleveland on December 5. Wembanyama’s return adds firepower, but turnovers (14.8/gm) remain a bugaboo.

OKC is unstoppable, extending a 16-game streak with a 138-89 demolition of Phoenix on December 10—holding the Suns under 40% FG in a playoff-like clinic. Last 10: 10-0, averaging 126.2 PPG and 104.5 allowed (+21.7 margin), including blowouts like 131-101 at Utah (December 7) and 132-111 vs. Dallas (December 5). Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s MVP-caliber play (32.6 PPG last 10) anchors it all, with the Thunder forcing 15.2 turnovers/gm. No rust here—their only “close” game was a 124-112 road win at Golden State on December 2.

Injury Report

Injuries are minimal but pivotal—San Antonio gets a massive boost with Wembanyama’s return, while OKC remains largely intact.

San Antonio Spurs:

Victor Wembanyama (C): Probable (Left Calf Strain) – Returning after 12 games out (since Nov. 14); expected minutes restriction, but his 20.5 PPG/10.2 RPG pre-injury changes everything.

David Jones Garcia (G): Questionable (G League Two-Way) – Limited impact if active (2.1 PPG in 10 GP).

Harrison Ingram (F): Out (G League Two-Way) – Rookie with minimal minutes (1.8 PPG).

Riley Minix (F): Out (G League Two-Way) – No NBA appearances yet.

Oklahoma City Thunder:

Isaiah Joe (G): Out (Left Knee Soreness) – Ruled out; 9.4 PPG off bench, key shooter (39.2% 3PT).

Nikola Topic (G): Out (Testicular Cancer) – Long-term, no timeline; undrafted rookie.

Thomas Sorber (C): Out (Right ACL Tear) – Season-ending from offseason; minimal role.

Coaches Gregg Popovich (SAS, interim Mitch Johnson?) and Mark Daigneault (OKC) lean on stars—Spurs’ bench tested, Thunder’s depth (10 players averaging 6+ PPG) shines.

Key Player Matchups

Wembanyama’s debut vs. OKC’s frontcourt looms large in this star-studded semifinal. Key battles:

Victor Wembanyama (SAS, C) vs. Chet Holmgren (OKC, C/PF): Wemby (20.5 PPG, 3.8 BPG pre-injury) returns to terrorize with length, but Holmgren (16.5 PPG, 2.4 BPG, 25 points vs. UTA) counters with mobility and range (37% 3PT). Expect paint dominance—Wemby’s blocks vs. Holmgren’s spacing could swing momentum.

De’Aaron Fox (SAS, PG) vs. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (OKC, SG/PG): Fox (24.0 PPG, 6.8 APG; 31 vs. ORL) thrives in transition, but SGA (32.6 PPG, 6.2 APG; 38 at GSW) is MVP frontrunner, winning 55% of head-to-heads career. SGA’s mid-range clinic (56.2% FG) tests Fox’s on-ball pressure.

Stephon Castle (SAS, PG/SG) vs. Jalen Williams (OKC, SF): Castle’s breakout (30 points/10 boards vs. LAL) meets Williams (19.1 PPG, 4.5 APG), OKC’s versatile wing (8 boards vs. PHX). Castle’s athleticism vs. Williams’ IQ—watch for switch-hunting.

Devin Vassell (SAS, SG) vs. Lu Dort (OKC, SG): Vassell (18.5 PPG, 37% 3PT) exploits gaps, but Dort (10.9 PPG, elite defender at 1.4 SPG) clamps shooters (opponents 32% 3PT vs. him). Vassell’s pull-ups vs. Dort’s physicality define perimeter battles.

Projected lineups (subject to change):

SAS: Fox-Vassell-Castle-Johnson-Wembanyama | Castle-White-Hartenstein-Barnes-Sochan

OKC: SGA-Williams-Dort-Holmgren-Hartenstein | Caruso-Wallace-Dieng-Chet-King

NBA Game Preview: New York Knicks (17-7) vs. Orlando Magic (15-10)

0

The New York Knicks (17-7) clash with the Orlando Magic (15-10) in a high-stakes Emirates NBA Cup semifinal, with the winner advancing to the championship game on December 17. This neutral-site battle revives a season series where Orlando holds a 2-1 edge, but New York’s red-hot form makes them the clear favorite. The action tips off at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights’ home but a neutral venue for this tournament showdown in the 17,500-seat arena. Game time is Saturday, December 13, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. ET (2:30 p.m. PT), exclusively streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Expect a playoff-like atmosphere under the bright lights, as both teams vie for $500,000 per player in prize money—New York seeks its first Cup final appearance, while Orlando aims to extend its perfect 4-0 tournament record.

Team Records and Standings

New York Knicks: 17-7 (34 points), second in the Atlantic Division and third in the Eastern Conference. The Knicks boast a +142 goal differential (2,982 points for, 2,840 against), ranking fourth in scoring (119.3 PPG) and fifth in defense (113.6 PPG allowed). Their 38.2% three-point shooting (league-best) and 82.1% free-throw rate fuel a balanced attack, though they’re 16-8 ATS overall.

Orlando Magic: 15-10 (30 points), first in the Southeast Division but fifth in the East. Orlando’s +68 differential (2,958 PF, 2,890 PA) highlights elite defense (112.4 PPG allowed, second in NBA) but middling offense (118.3 PPG, 18th). They excel in rebounding (45.1 RPG, third) but lag on threes (34.8%, 22nd) and free throws (76.5%, 28th).

New York’s offensive firepower contrasts Orlando’s grit, but injuries could force a defensive slugfest in Vegas.

Recent Team Forms

The Knicks are scorching, winners of eight of their last 10 (8-2) with a +12.4 point differential, averaging 119.8 PPG while holding foes to 107.4. Their latest: a 117-101 rout of Toronto on December 10, where Jalen Brunson erupted for 35 points. Over the last five (4-1), they’ve won by double digits three times, including a 106-100 grind vs. Orlando on December 7. Defensive clamps (under 110 points allowed in four straight) and Brunson’s All-Star pace (28.5 PPG last 10) have them peaking.

Orlando enters 7-3 in its last 10 (+5.2 differential), blending wins with narrow escapes but stumbling without key wings. They edged Miami 117-108 on December 9 behind Desmond Bane’s 37 points, but a 106-100 loss at New York exposed scoring woes (100 PPG in defeat). Last five: 3-2, with losses to San Antonio (114-112) and New York sandwiching a 106-105 thriller vs. Miami. Rebounding dominance (47.0 RPG last 10) keeps them afloat, but 42.1% FG in losses signals offensive rust.

Injury Report

Injuries strike both rosters, thinning scoring and depth for this do-or-die tilt—expect heavy minutes for stars.

New York Knicks:

Pacôme Dadiet (F): Questionable (Left Ankle Sprain) – Day-to-day since December 9; limited to 4.2 PPG in 12 games.

Miles McBride (G): Out (Left Ankle Sprain) – Re-eval December 18; 7.1 PPG off bench, key defender.

Landry Shamet (G): Out (Right Shoulder Sprain) – Until December 24; missed 15 games, 6.3 PPG shooter.

Orlando Magic:

Franz Wagner (F): Out (Left High Ankle Sprain) – Until December 26; 22.4 PPG leader, missed last game with no timeline beyond 2-4 weeks.

Moritz Wagner (F/C): Out (Left Knee Injury Recovery) – Until December 18; 8.2 PPG, 4.1 RPG in 18 games.

Colin Castleton (C): Out (Left Thumb Fracture) – Until December 22; minimal impact (3.5 PPG in 10 games).

Coaches Tom Thibodeau (NYK) and Jamahl Mosley (ORL) must juggle rotations—New York’s bench depth tested, Orlando leaning on youth like Anthony Black.

Key Player Matchups

This semifinal hinges on star duels and defensive schemes, with Orlando’s absences amplifying New York’s edges.

Jalen Brunson (NYK, PG) vs. Jalen Suggs (ORL, PG): Brunson (27.8 PPG, 6.7 APG season; 30.5 PPG last 5) dismantled Orlando with 30 points on December 7. Suggs (12.4 PPG, elite defender at 1.8 SPG) must hound him full-court—Brunson’s 48% mid-range vs. Suggs’ physicality could dictate tempo.

Paolo Banchero (ORL, PF) vs. OG Anunoby/Mikal Bridges (NYK, Wings): Banchero (21.2 PPG, 7.8 RPG; 18 points in return vs. MIA) thrives driving (8.2 FTA/game), but Anunoby (16.5 PPG, 1.2 BPG) and Bridges (18.2 PPG, 1.1 SPG) form a switchable wall. Banchero’s 20.7 PPG career vs. Knicks demands 25+ for Orlando to compete.

Karl-Anthony Towns (NYK, C) vs. Wendell Carter Jr. (ORL, C): Towns (22.1 PPG, 10.2 RPG; 14-16 double-double vs. TOR) exploits mismatches post-injury return. Carter (11.0 PPG, 7.3 RPG) anchors Orlando’s paint (team-best 52.1% eFG defense), but Towns’ stretch-five threat (38% 3PT) could pull him out.

Desmond Bane (ORL, SG) vs. Knicks Backcourt (Bridges/Hart): Bane (19.0 PPG, 4.5 APG; 37 vs. MIA) is Orlando’s X-factor sans Wagner. Bridges’ length (2.1 SPG) and Hart’s hustle (9.2 RPG) aim to disrupt his off-ball movement—Bane’s 42% 3PT vs. Knicks’ 34.8% opponent 3PT allowed.

Projected lineups (subject to change):

NYK: Brunson-Towns-Bridges-Anunoby-Hart | DiVincenzo-McConnell-Hartenstein-Randle-Daigneault

ORL: Suggs-Bane-Banchero-Black-Carter | Anthony-Trent Jr.-Isaac-Igawao-Owusu

Series History

The Knicks and Magic’s rivalry dates to Orlando’s 1989 inception, with 137 regular-season meetings yielding a slim 70-67 Magic edge (50.7%). New York leads playoffs 4-3 (including a 1999 ECF sweep), but Orlando’s home dominance (37-32) persists. This season: Magic 2-1, outscoring Knicks 390-334 (+19 differential). Wins: 124-107 (Nov. 12, MSG), 133-121 (Nov. 22, Kia Center); Knicks’ 106-100 revenge (Dec. 7). Games average 225.3 points, with Orlando 3-0 ATS vs. New York.

NHL Morning Skate – Dec. 13, 2025

* The Mammoth and Blues each skated to wins in closely contested games on Friday as Utah’s Dylan Guenther rose to the occasion for his club once again. His eight go-ahead goals are tied for the third most among all players this season.

* The Wild acquired Quinn Hughes from the Canucks, who will become the first Norris Trophy winner to play for the franchise. Hughes and Minnesota general manager, Bill Guerin, will also collaborate with Team USA at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 after the Orlando, Fla., native was one of the first six players named to the country’s preliminary roster.

Connor McDavid, who has shone in his hometown at both the professional and international level, returns to Scotiabank Arena as part of a four-game Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday. On Friday, Edmonton traded for goaltender Tristan Jarry, who spent four seasons playing for the WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings and backstopped them to a WHL championship and Memorial Cup in 2013-14.

CENTRAL DIVISION CLUBS EARN WINS IN CLOSELY CONTESTED GAMES

The Mammoth (15-15-3, 33 points) and Blues (12-14-7, 31 points) each edged out a tightly contested victory during Friday’s two-pack of NHL action and moved closer to the playoff line in the Western Conference, where six teams are separated by four points.

Mason Marchment scored twice for the Kraken, including a game-tying goal in the third period, but Dylan Guenther responded roughly five minutes later with his eighth go-ahead goal of the season to help Utah improve to 2-0-0 in home games against Seattle. Guenther’s eight go-ahead goals are tied with Morgan Geekie and Seth Jarvis for the third most among all players this season, behind Cole Caufield (10) and Bo Horvat (9).

Connor Bedard (0-2—2) factored on two Blackhawks goals en route to his 40th career multi-point game, but Robert Thomas (0-2—2) also collected two assists – including a helper on the game-winning goal – as the Blues improved to 8-2-0 in their past 10 home games against their longtime rival. Overall, Thomas (19-61—80) became the ninth player in franchise history to factor on 80 career game-winning goals.

FAMILIAR FACES ONTO NEW PLACES TO START THE WEEKEND

The Wild acquired Quinn Hughes from the Canucks in exchange for Marco RossiZeev BuiumLiam Öhgren and a first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, while the Oilers acquired Tristan Jarry and Samuel Poulin from the Penguins in exchange for Stuart SkinnerBrett Kulak and a second-round pick in the 2029 NHL Draft.

* Hughes, named captain of the Canucks in 2023-24, joins the Wild with 61-371—432 (459 GP; 0.94 P/GP) in his career since debuting in 2018-19 and owns the second-highest points per game among defensemen during that span (min. 5 GP) behind only Cale Makar (1.09 P/GP). The two-time NHL All-Star also owns a Norris Trophy (2023-24) on his resume and shares the distinction as the second-fastest American defenseman in League history to reach 400 career points (also Gary Suter: 421 GP), behind Brian Leetch (380 GP). Overall, Hughes will be the first Norris winner to play for the Wild.

* Jarry, who leaves Pittsburgh with the longest shutout sequence in Penguins history and the only goaltender in franchise history to score a goal, returns to the city of Edmonton after backstopping the Oil Kings to the Ed Chynoweth Cup as WHL champions and a Memorial Cup in 2013-14. Fast forward to 2025-26 and Jarry ranks eighth in high-danger save percentage (.848) among goaltenders to face 100 or more high-danger shots prior to the trade.

SATURDAY’S Schedule HEADLINED BY FOUR HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA GAMES
Saturday’s 13-game slate is highlighted by four Hockey Night in Canada contests, including an Original Six matchup at Madison Square Garden and a showdown between two superstars at Scotiabank Arena.

Nick Suzuki and the Canadiens are pitted against Artemi Panarin and the Rangers in one of two Original Six matchups Saturday. Suzuki has found the back of the net in each of his last four contests versus New York dating to Oct. 22, 2024, and can become the first Montreal player in nearly 43 years with a five-game goal streak against the Rangers (Steve Shutt: 5 GP from Oct. 25, 1981 – Jan. 27, 1983).

Connor McDavid and the Oilers (3-0-1 since Dec. 4) put their four-game point streak on the line when they visit Auston Matthews and the Maple Leafs (4-0-2 since Nov. 29). McDavid (1.52 P/GP) and Matthews (0.63 G/GP), who played together with Team North America during the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, are the active leaders in career points and goals per game, respectively, and rank among the top three in NHL history for each category (min. 500 GP).

Alex Ovechkin can add to his highest career goal total against one franchise when the Capitals clash with Mark Scheifele and the Jets, who look to snap a three-game slide. Ovechkin has 58 career tallies versus Winnipeg (including 30 from when the club was known as the Atlanta Thrashers) and can become the first player to score his 60th goal against a single franchise since Jaromir Jagr (March 1, 2012 vs. NYI).

Nazem Kadri and the Flames can record their fourth win in five games when they face Anze Kopitar and the Kings during a Pacific Division duel. Kopitar needs six points to reach 1,300 in his career and tie longtime Calgary captain Jarome Iginla on the NHL’s all-time list as well as 14 to dethrone Marcel Dionne (1,307) for the most in franchise history.

* Saturday is set to feature several more head-to-head games between No. 1 picks including Macklin Celebrini visiting Sidney Crosby during one of two matinees on Sportsnet, Connor Bedard hosting Patrick Kane in the latter’s return to United Center as well as Steven Stamkos following up his four-goal night against Art Ross Trophy race leader Nathan MacKinnon. Crosby has 1,497 career points as a captain and can become the third player in NHL history with 1,500 while donning the “C” after Wayne Gretzky (1,731) and Steve Yzerman (1,537).

McDAVID’S COMMUNITY EFFORTS HIGHLIGHTED AHEAD OF GAME IN HOMETOWN

Connor McDavid will be making his return to Toronto, just over 30 miles from where he grew up playing minor hockey. McDavid’s impact on the game of hockey has gone well beyond the ice and into the Edmonton community, starting with the bond he created with Oilers superfan Ben Stelter.
